Spacious Self Catering Gite Cottage near Vezelay - Yonne, Burgundy

** Book now for best spring/summer 2013 dates - end of May half term week available again following cancellation **

With spacious rooms, high ceilings and loads of light, 'Les Framboisiers' is a characterful, comfortable, well-equipped holiday house in a lively farming village complete with a large, safe enclosed garden. Guests have especially commented on the kitchen set-up because (even though the recent cooker is a basic model) there's everything you need here to do proper cooking if you're tempted - like decent pots, pans and knives etc. And don't worry - there's a dishwasher!

'Les Framboisiers' is ideal for one or two couples, friends, as well as families with children. In fact it's just right for anyone who wants to explore medieval Vezelay, taste wine in Chablis or Beaune, try out Montillot's excellent riding school, cycle the lanes and canal paths, walk in the forests, or simply relax in the garden and enjoy the sights and sounds of authentic Burgundian village life.

The excellent village services on hand include a terrific bakery, friendly bar and small mini-market. And there are visiting butcher's and baker's vans too. All in all 'Les Framboisiers' and Montillot make a great base for lovers of real France.

Holiday Accommodation at Les Framboisiers

'Les Framboisiers' is a characterful, comfortable, well-equipped gite with high ceilings and original features including two lovely fireplaces in the living room and main bedroom. Built on the end of extensive barns and other outbuildings, it overlooks a large, grassy enclosed garden with hazelnut, walnut, plum, apple and pear trees.

Upstairs

There is:

  • A large double bedroom with king size bed,
  • 1 twin bedroom (space for 3rd single mattress suitable for a child). Both bedrooms have stripped and varnished wooden floors.

Downstairs

There is:

  • A spacious living room and
  • Well-equipped kitchen diner (both with Burgundy red 'tommette' tiles throughout)
  • Plus a good-sized bathroom with bath and shower.

Unusually for a village property, the rooms have high ceilings and loads of light. There's a large airy sitting room on the left as you go in, complete with two large windows that overlook the garden and street outside.

Opposite that there's a good-sized kitchen-diner with large table and all the kitchen equipment, cutlery and crockery you need to cook up a storm – again it has a nice garden view, the sun streaming in in the morning. Feel free to use the cupboard 'staples' always in stock like oil and vinegar - simply replacing them if they get used up. The spacious bathroom with shower is off the back of the kitchen.

The large double and good-sized twin bedrooms upstairs are also reached from the kitchen via attractive wooden stairs.

About Montillot in Yonne, Burgundy

Surrounded by thick, wild boar-inhabited forests and rolling, unspoilt farming country, 'Les Framboisiers' is directly on Montillot's main street as you enter this charming working village. It's just off the road which winds 4kms or so up the hill from the Cure river valley below. Montillot's rather grand-looking Mairie (town hall) is directly opposite. We're also very near the imposing village church with its regular chimes.

Now, along with its stunning rural setting, what's really special about Montillot is its dynamic village services - sadly long gone in so many other villages.

From the house it's a mere 200m stroll down to the village square and the legendary boulangerie, with a well-stocked mini-market and cosy, authentic bar just a few metres further on. What with the visiting butchers and fishmongers it's easy to be self-sufficient for food here if you wanted. Or, you can go in to pretty Avallon (18kms), and stock up at the Auchan or Casino supermarkets (or fantastic Saturday morning market with all the trimmings) for the fridge- freezer.

The beautiful hilltop village of Vezelay with its vast 11th century basilica is just 9kms from here. Other great places to visit nearby include Montillot's charming and friendly riding school; the fabulous north Burgundy wine country of Chablis, Irancy and St Bris; Vauban's chateau at Bazoches; the 'build-a-full-size-medieval-castle-using-medieval-tools' project at Guedelon. Then there's gorgeous Dijon and Beaune to the south east. And that's just for starters.

For great cooking head to the incomparable and stylish 'Auberge des Chenets' at Valloux (6km - 'probably the best €26 menu in the entire world'); the 'Bougainville' in Vezelay (9kms - excellent 'cuisine du terroir moderne'); fantastic Bar/Restaurant Le Chalet on A6 just beyond Voutenay at St More (great value €11 four course menu with loads of choice and lively local atmosphere); Cafe de la Cure at Blannay (4km authentic and very filling 'menu' for €14); Les Grignottes at Bazoches (22kms -  the real-deal lunchtime experience - brilliant set menu with absolutely no choices for €14).

By rail

This house is a beautiful and comfortable base from which to explore the many attractions nearby. It had everything we needed and more – and the local bakery was a daily treat! Clean and welcoming, useful maps, games and comfortable beds – we felt at home straight away.

The gite is very comfortable and welcoming, and extremely well-equipped – like a home from home. Very much enjoyed exploring the local area, especially Avallon, Auxerre, and the beautiful woods and valleys. Thank you!

Just a wonderful cottage and garden in a glorious location. We loved being in ‘La France profonde’ in an authentic farming village. Great bar and alimentation! Did many of the recommended things especially food. Very friendly local representative who gave us lots of interesting ideas. We will be back!

A wonderful week in a lovely location. Ate at the Auberge des Chenets in Valloux and Le Bougainville in Vézelay, both excellent! Avallon and Vézelay are lovely, as are many of the surrounding villages. We have had a great week here. Thank you."

Our second wonderful holiday here. The weather was so glorious we did not do much but sit in the garden and read. Auberge des Chenets as good as ever. Hope to come next year!

We have stayed in several ‘gites’ and this one has been the best. This was the last week of a month-long motorcycling holiday all round France. Superbly equipped with all home comforts. Will recommend this house to anyone looking for a few days of niceness!
