A Luxurious, Tranquil Oasis in the Middle of Town - For Families or Groups
If your dream holiday house in France is one within easy walking distance of the boulangerie yet a haven of peace, La Suprise is the place for you. This imposing 18th century mansion is situated just off the centre of the little town of Riberac in the Dordogne and your baguette is just two minutes away. You are home before the coffee has percolated! Add to that the fact that the walled garden (3,500 sq m) is safe for children and the proximity to local entertainment means you do not have to run a teenage taxi service - or take turns to drive at night - and you have the makings of real fun and relaxation for everyone.
This delightful house is in the middle of Riberac. It's facade greets you at the top of a short incline from the main square. You enter via a short flight of steps through double front doors into a large chandelier-lit, tiled hall with the main reception rooms to right and left. The electric gates to the left of the house take you into a 35 metre long courtyard with parking for five cars, which is also accessed from the house by various French windows. There are two areas for dining al fresco and two indoors. All accommodate 10-12 people.
At the end of the courtyard is a very large barn converted into a games room with table tennis, darts and table football. Outside this there is a heated pool (10m x 5m x 1.40m with alarm) and a long terrace with an electric awning. From this, the garden rises through a grassy parterre and rose beds to a wooded area with winding paths, which give superb views over Riberac and the surrounding countryside.
Glorious tranquillity for adults and a safe adventure playground for the younger members of the party. By contrast the main square of Riberac and the Friday market are less than five minutes away on foot. There are four restaurants within walking distance and several bars plus a high street with all the little shops which have disappeared from UK towns and villages. If you want to do a major shop in one go, there are two large supermarkets a short drive away.
Holiday Accommodation at No 1 Place Jules Brunet
The house is spacious with numerous nooks and crannies and has been recently luxuriously refurbished to a high standard. It sleeps 10 in various permutations in five bedrooms all completely differently decorated. Three are en suite and there are two additional bathrooms and two separate WC's.
There is a television room with a 127cm screen and free sat. In addition to the grand salon which has ample seating for 10, the study provides a quiet environment behind closed doors for those who want to/have to work. There is wi-fi throughout and an i-pod station in the salon.
The kitchen is electric, with double sink, American fridge, fridge, deepfreeze, dishwasher and microwave. The kitchen table seats 10-12 for informal meals when you don’t want to use the very elegant, traditionally-furnished dining room next door.
The utility room has a washing machine, tumble drier, iron and ironing board.
In detail the accommodation (approximately 550 sq. m) comprises the following:

About Riberac in Dordogne, Aquitaine
Riberac (population 4,500) is a small unspoilt town in the Perigord, which is synonymous with wine, foie gras and truffles. It is surrounded by woodland, gentle hills and farmland, the landscape dotted with ancient villages and lovely churches. The area is small scale, very rural and there is no traffic to speak of. The stars at night never cease to amaze. The River Dronne flows through the town and there are fountains in the main square. There is a wide variety of shops ranging from a tantalisingly comprehensive haberdasher to a hunting/shooting/fishing paradise for any hunter-gatherer you have with you.
Riberac played a prominent part in the French Revolution in this part of France and the house is named after an erstwhile mayor who once lived there. You can see the socket for his flagpole above the front door if you look out of the landing window!
Eating and Drinking
There are five restaurants within walking distance and others in Verteillac, Bertric Buree, Lusignac and the middle of nowhere just ten minutes away by car.
Cooking varies from rustic, French, international, fish, Chinese, Thai - you can take your choice.
The wine of the area needs no introduction. Bordeaux, Graves, Sauternes, Medoc and many more.
Pineau de Charentes, a fortified white wine is the local aperitif of choice – also delicious over melon!
