Lovely Villa in the Dordogne in Peaceful, Rural Surroundings

This comfortable three-bedroom villa offers a relaxing break, in peaceful, rural surroundings, yet close to Bergerac and the beautiful city of Bordeaux, wine capital of the world.

Offering a lovely garden with pool in the wider, sunlit part of the Dordogne valley, this property provides a chance to see many local sights of historical and cultural importance or just take to take time to relax in the sun.

Holiday Accommodation at Courreau

The single storey house was built in 1986 and is situated in grounds of about two-thirds of an acre with a selection of trees, a pond and a figure of eight, unfenced, swimming pool (with a safety alarm conforming to legislation).

The property will take 6; however, it is more suited to two couples or a family of four or five. Two of the three bedrooms have a king size and a double bed respectively whilst the twin bedroom contains a comfortable, full size (3') single bed together with a trundle bed that sits below the main bed when not in use. This allows this room to be used as a comfortable single room for an adult or a child; however, with the trundle bed brought into use, it can be used as a twin. However, if used as a twin this is best suited to young children as the available space is limited.

The property is on one floor and consists of:

  • An entrance hall off which is
  • A well equipped kitchen equipped with a hob, oven, microwave and washing machine. All the usual appliances are available.
  • A large lounge/diner with settee and three easy chairs, a dining table with chairs for six and a desk with computer and free broadband internet access. There is a wood burning stove which is very cosy in winter.
  • A bathroom with a bath and shower over, a basin and a toilet.
  • Three bedrooms, two double bedrooms one with a double bed and fitted wardrobes and cupboards and the other with a kingsize bed and fitted wardrobes. These rooms have cooling ceiling fans, useful in the hotter weather.
  • The third bedroom is ideal as a summer room if only the double rooms are required. This has access to the garden through double French doors. However, this room also contains a single bed thus making it suitable as a single room. There is also a trundle bed available in this room so that it can be used as a twin but this would only be suitable for young children. It is best as a single or left as a summer room. There is a wardrobe and a chest of drawers and a table top fan.
  • This room has an en-suite wet room/shower room with a shower, toilet and basin. This makes an excellent wet-room for general use.
  • A separate toilet

Outside there is a small shaded, patio area with a table and chairs for al fresco dining.

There is an extensive library in the lounge which visitors may use during their stay. There is a HD 3D LED Sony 32" television and a Blu-ray HD/3D player and recorder with HDD (records from French TV only) and a DVD player with the ability to record from the Sky box onto DVDs. There is a good selection of DVDs for film and tele addicts. There is also a Sky box which, without a card, will receive the freeview channels except ITV1 and Channel Four.

All bedroom windows have insect screens.

About Montcaret in Dordogne, Aquitaine

The house is situated in the Commune of Montcaret, on the western edge of the department of Dordogne and mid-way between the towns of Castillon La Bataille and the charming, little town of Sainte Foy La Grande. Both towns, each about 11 kilomtres distant, lie on the famous river of the same name and are themselves worthy of a visit.

Castillon is the site of the battle of 1453 that marked the end of the Hundred Years War and England’s loss of the last of its French territories except for Calais. The battle is re-enacted in a spectacular, night-time display every summer in July and August.

Ste Foy is a Bastide town with a criss-cross of narrow streets with many ancient houses. The town boasts a delightful Saturday market featuring a wonderful variety of produce including breads, fresh fruit and vegetables, garlic, oysters, prunes, wines, cheese and much more. Both towns have a good selection of restaurants and shops.

A little further afield, to the east, lies the well visited town of Bergerac whilst to the west lies, in order, St Emilion, Libourne and then Bordeaux. St Emilion is a beautiful, historic, hilltop town, well known for its wine, Libourne has an excellent Sunday market whilst Bordeaux needs little introduction as one of France’s major cities, a cultural centre, home of Les Girondins de Bordeaux for football fans and the very hub of the wine industry. The park and ride into Bordeaux is reached in comfortably less than one hour.

Much closer to the house is the Château de Montaigne where the 16th century writer Michel de Montaigne wrote many of his highly influential essays on the nature of life and humankind and, in Montcaret village itself, the fourth-century Gallo-Roman villa with superb mosaics, baths and museum.

The village of Montcaret which is about two kilometres away has a wonderful boulangerie/patisserie as well as a general grocery store and news/tabac store. The house is part of a tiny lieu-dit of a dozen or so houses, immediately below the shallow, northern wall of the Dordogne valley – in the area where the valley has widened to a sunlit, green vale in contrast to the dark gorges that characterise the valley in the east of the department.

See Local guide and map for information on nearby towns and facilities.

How To Get To Montcaret in Dordogne, South West France

The property is approximately 35 minutes away from Bergerac Airport. Merignac Airport at Bordeaux is approximately 70 minutes.

Bordeaux station can be reached by the TGV and travel to the house is then about 70 minutes.
There is a railway station at the nearby village of Velines, about 3 kilometres, on the Bordeaux to Sarlat line. However, trains stop infrequently at Velines, providing mainly for commuters. More trains stop at Ste Foy La Grande and Castillon.

If you are travelling by air or train, a hire car is pretty much essential.

If bringing your own car, Calais is 550 miles and takes about 8 hours travelling time at legal speed limits on the A16; A28 and A10. The ferry to St Malo will bring you nearer to the house at about 350 miles and taking about 6 hours travel time via the A83 and A10.

See Local guide and map for information on nearby towns and airports.
