Holiday Gite in the Lot Valley
"La Petite Grange" is located on the limestone "causse" above the Lot and Célé rivers and enjoys long hours of sunshine and in the hot summer, welcome cooling breezes. The scent of Genevrier and wild thyme and the distant views of wooded hills with tiny villages perched among theme, surround the property.
This pretty stone built gite is set along a quiet, peaceful lane making it safe for children and a place to really relax. The gite is not far at all from pretty medieval villages such as St. Cirq Lapopie voted one of the prettiest villages in France. Cahors, Figeac and Villefranche de Roueregue all about 40 minutes distant. The pretty village of Cajarc is very convenient for shopping and restaurants and is only about 15 minutes away on a stunningly pretty road.
Holiday Accommodation at La Petite Grange
"La Petite Grange" is built from local Quercy stone with old oak beams and traditional terracotta tiled floors. It is on one level, ideal with children or elderly folk and there is a spacious covered terrace at the front, which looks Southwards towards the Lot valley and distant wooded hills. Under the covered terrace there is a table and chairs & BBQ for al fresco dining. Through French windows you enter into:
- The attractive lounge/dining room. This room has a high ceiling, feels spacious and has a large woodburning stove. There is a comfortable sofa (which can double as a bed settee), 2 leather armchairs and coffee table. The dining area has an antique pine table (which seats 6), large "buffet" cupboard, and well stocked book case. There is also a satellite TV installed for your use and plenty of board games for the children.
- Well equipped kitchen
- The 2 double bedrooms lead off either side of this room. One has 2 single beds and the other a double bed, each with a wardrobe, chest of drawers etc. Both rooms face over the front garden and have pretty views towards the valley. We also now have a travel cot, baby bath and high chair should you have a baby.
- Family bathroom with electric heated towel rail in bathroom.
About St Martin Labouval in Lot, Midi Pyrenees
"La Petite Grange" is in the tiny hamlet of Bennac, 4 kms from the pretty village of St Martin Labouval. The lane on which La Petite Grange is situated is a "dead end" lane so there is very little traffic, except the odd rambler, wild deer or sanglier!
We are situated in the heart of the National Park of the "Causses du Quercy" which is not only an area of outstanding natural beauty but has an abundance of historic and beautiful towns and vilages to visit.
From the nearest village of St Martin Labouval follow the river road to Cajarc (10 to 15 minutes drive) where you will see the most stunning scenery, of towering limestone cliffs, a patchwork of tobacco, maize and sunflower fields, the meandering river Lot and the pretty medieval hilltop village of Calvignac.
In Cajarc, the nearest small town there is a small well stocked supermarket, several restaurants and bars, a tabac, boulangeries etc. and a beautiful "Plein D'eau" where one can sit on the edge of the river with an ice cold beer and watch people just "messing about on the river". The old railway station and bridge here featured in the film "Charlotte Gray" and things haven't changed much since then!
If you follow the road in the opposite direction towards Cahors following a superbly scenic route, you will pass the lovely village of St Cirq Lapopie perched high above the valley, well worth a visit for its medieval architecture, numerous restaurants, art galleries and its speciality gourmet shops selling everything from paté de foie gras, confit de canard, and everything it's possible to make from walnuts!
The "Grottes du Peche Merle" at Cabrerets with their famous prehistoric cave paintings, are only a few miles away and a great place to visit, especially on a hot day, with the caves being at a constant cool temperature.
In the nearby village of Cenevieres the imposingly positioned "Chateau de Cenevieres" towers above the river Lot on a sheer limestone cliff (and incidentally can be seen from the panoramic viewpoint at the end of our lane, a 5 minutes walk away).
Further afield, about 1 hours drive is Rocamadour, a spectacular medieval town and one of the most visited places in France, it seems to cling precariously to the 1600 ft cliffs. If the steep cobbled streets are too strenous, it's possible to take a little train up into the town where for the more energetic it's possible to climb the ramparts of the old Chateau and see the black Madonna in the old Cathedral.
The list is endless, but in the autumn months a visit to the small town of Lalbenque in Quercy Blanc is unmissable for it's famous Truffle market, where ordinary folk and restauranteurs flock for miles around.
Cahors with it's tranquil mediteranean atmosphere, famous for it's "black" wine, medieval streets and the ancient Pont Valentré is a beautiful 40 minute drive along the river road.
Figeac, famed for the Musée de Champollion has a totally different feel but is just as engaging and is also about 40 kms from the property.
And Villefranche de Rouergue ..another beautiful "bastide" town..again about 40 kms distant.
Out of high season the National Park is as appealing as ever..the Autumn and winter having a charm of their own. The colours of the foliage and often fine sunny weather are particulary attractive to walkers, cyclists, artists and photographers...it's an excellent time for sightseeing.
