Home description

Olive Tree Cottage is part of  a 250 year old farmhouse,  once the home of a vineyard owner and now offers spacious and attractive holiday accommodation. Set in peaceful vineyard countryside between the silver beaches of the Atlantic coast and the lush Dordogne Valley, it is the ideal base from which to explore this beautiful corner of South West France.

If your perfect holiday involves sitting in the sun enjoying a glass or two of the local wine, then this is the place for you, the village winery is just two minutes stagger up the lane. On the other hand if you like swimming, cycling, canoeing, golf, fishing, shopping, sightseeing and eating out, you will find something for everyone to enjoy.

The swimming pool is 11m x 5m, max 1.2m depth, is safety alarmed and has easy access Roman steps and underwater lighting.

We even have a small fleet of bikes for you to use free at anytime.

A spacious cottage comprising:

• Kitchen - a traditonal style kitchen with terracotta tiled floors and period fireplace but  fully equipped with cooker, fridge freezer, microwave, dishwasher & washing machine
• Lounge - cosy room with log burning stove and exposed beams. There is TV, video and hi-fi and a choice of over 250 films to watch 
• Bedroom one - with huge exposed oak beams and double bed.
• Ensuite bathroom with shower & wc

About the location

Arcachon

Arcachon and the Atlantic Coast have a lot to offer. Beaches which stretch for miles, Dune de Pyla - Europes highest sand dune, a lighthouse, boat trips, bird sanctuary, narrow gauge railway and of course many restaurants dishing up freshly caught oysters, mussels, fish and prawns.

Street markets

For a true taste of French rural life, be sure to do some shopping at Castillons Monday market.The streets fill with stalls and country folk buying golden, spit-roasted chickens, creamy farmyard cheeses, flowers, fresh local fruit and vegetables, kitchen gadgets, live geese and rabbits, guns, oriental rugs and just about anything else you could imagine. The atmosphere is so typical of France and is a social event for the older folk. Whilst the women do the shopping, their husbands smoke their Gauloise cigarettes, joke and chatter until lunchtime.

The choice of restaurants throughout the area is impressive and they always offer good value for money. 3 courses for a little as 10 Euros. Local dishes include Atlantic Oysters, Mussels and Crab, Roast Duck from Périgord, Goose Pate, Lamb from Pauillac and Entrecote Bordelaise - thick juicy beef steaks grilled over the embers of vine twigs served with a rich red wine sauce and lots of pommes frites.

St Emilion

Time stands still in St. Emilion. Golden sandstone houses cling to the hillside. Narrow streets lead you past ancient buildings to parapets with splendid views across wavy tiled roofs, to a sea of vineyards in the distance.

Linger over a long lunch at one of the restaurants which spill out onto the cobbled square. Visit the 12^th Century Eglise Monolithe, a subterranean church.

Taste before you buy at dozens of fine wine shops. Stroll and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and finish by sitting in the courtyard of the Couvent des Cordeliers. Here they will serve you a chilled bottle of sparkling wine made in the cellars below, which you can sip with a dish of St. Emilion Macaroons, a local delicacy.

Bordeaux  is an elegant stylish city. Go there for fashionable shops, open air antique markets, museums, art galleries, theatre, opera and concerts.

Historical towns

The French finally drove the English out of France at the Battle of Castillon. Many of the charming fortified towns in the area date back to those trouble times known as The Hundred Years War.

Shopping

Hypermarkets and a large range of shops can be found ten minutes drive away in Castillon La Bataille plus banks, pharmacy, doctor, post office and railway station.

How to get here

By Ferry:  Brittany Ferries, Hoverspeed, Speedferries, Le Shuttle operate cross channel services. We are approx 6 hours from St Malo and 8 hours from Calais.

By Air: Bordeaux Airport is 50 minutes away and Bergerac Airport only 35 minutes. Bordeaux also has excellent links with Paris and the rest of Europe via its rail link and airport.
