Where is it

Provence Gard

This sunny, attractive apartment in a building from "fin de XVIV siècle" is just 1 min. walk from the enchanting Place aux Herbes with the well loved (and well attended) Saturday market as well as the smaller market on Wednesdays. With one foot in the countryside & the other in the town center, you have the best of 2 worlds with a south/east facing terrace overlooking the Eure valley and Racine's pavillion, the other foot being literally in the town center. This may sound uncomfortable but no way, two deep & embracing Heal's armchairs make sure you relax after the marketing/sightseeing/farniente.

There are countless little restaurants & cafés literally round the corner, at last count, we found 10 in the square itself with another 7/8 just beyond.

A garage located 6 minutes walk away can also be rented subject to availability.

About the location

Uzès has an abundance of cafès, shops, restaurants and all other amenities as well as the now very well known Provençal Saturday market which is an absolute "must", being one of the most delightful in the region. All this at 150m walk away!

Uzés has the distinction of being the 1st Duché of France, it´s castle and the title having been in the same family since the 12th century. Though the history of the small town goes back a long time before the Romans, the towers and arcades we see today are mostly of medeival origin.

For many centuries Uzés was a real Sleeping Beauty waiting for her prince. He finally came in the late 1950´ in the shape of the then Minister of Culture, André Malraux, who declared the town a "national treasure" and to be treated accordingly. Thus woken from it´s long slumber, Uzés today is an extraordinarily pretty place with it´s sandstone buildings reflecting the warm, Provençal sunshine. A favourite with many writers and artists, the ancient Uzetia is now very much a living town again with a rich cultural life all year around.

On a practical level, in this apartment you are never more than 1 minute away from the nearest café or small restaurant!

Provence/Gard is the most fortunate region where all the good things for which France is justly famous have combined.

The department of Gard stretches from the wild and beautiful mountains of the Cevennes across the Rhone Valley and sweeps down to the endless, sandy beaches of the Mediterranean.

Small, stonebuilt villages dot the hillsides amongst vineyards and fields of sunflowers, yet one is never far away from sophisticated, mediaeval towns. The Gard is immensely rich in historical sites dating from pre-Roman times and from the turbulent Middle Ages when various kings, French or otherwise, tried to annex the area, each leaving their mark.

With an enormously varied countryside enjoying a special light, similar to that of Tuscany, the Gard has long been favoured by artists and poets which today is evident in the many exhibitions and cultural events taking place even in the smallest of villages.
