Home description

Where is it

Tarn-et-Garonne

This is an ideal situation for two families holidaying together, who nevertheless want some space to call their own. However, they can be let separately at half the prices shown, although the cottages are normally let as one in high season. When let together, the two cottages offer two bathrooms and four separate WCs, (a point much appreciated by parties). A catering service provides chilled meals at modest prices if required.

The setting is a tiny hilltop group of houses known as Le Mas, surrounding an arable farmhouse. Part of this group of houses forms two separate stone buildings which have been superbly restored to become separate but adjacent cottages. They are completely private from the farm and the other houses. There is no through traffic as there is no other habitation beyond Le Mas. Peace and tranquillity abound.

Both cottages share a private garden. The garden faces south but has some shade as well. There are pleasant views over adjoining farmland. The fenced pool can be floodlit at night. There is table tennis and barbecues. There is every opportunity for al fresco dining under pantiled verandas, plenty of sun beds and two umbrellas.

Catering Service

Bridget is not only our very efficient Properties Manager but also a brilliant cook as well. If you telephone her by mid day, she will arrange to deliver either chilled or frozen meals, so that you can let the microwave take the strain away from the cook. To the main dish you can add a baguette, maybe a sprinkling of salad and perhaps your own sweet as well. There is a good selection of dishes to choose from including vegetarian. Bridget uses only fresh ingredients and hand-picked herbs in her home-cooked dishes.

Please Note

Both properties have polished wood open treaded staircases which may make them unsuitable for the elderly and infirm but also unsuitable for very young children. The swimming pool is fenced to protect under fives in particular. All swimming pools are obviously a hazard to non swimmers, to other vulnerable groups and of course, to the very young. We are happy to offer details of  Bridget's catering service. However, Bridget takes full responsibility for it, as it is separate from our business and we have no financial or other involvement in her business.

About the location

Here you can relax, unwind and let the much slower lifestyle soothe away the stresses and strains. You are near the lovely valley of the River Lot with Cahors, Luzech, and Puy L'Eveque being just a few places to visit all along that stretch of the river. Nearer still are the bastide villages of Tournon to the north, Roquecor itself, Penne d'Agennais to the west and Lauzerte to the south. There are some 300 of these fortified hilltop villages in this part of France.

Here are wonderful sweeps of countryside like Dorset and intimate hills and valleys which are much like Devon but so much warmer. It can be hot in summer with 26 to 28 degrees being quite usual in July, but a little less hot in August. Remaining holiday months are in the 18 to 25 degree range.

Close by you will find wonderful wines at bargain prices; Bergerac from the Dordogne, Cahors, Cotes de Gascogne and less well known ones like Madiran, Buzet, Cotes de Duras and Montbazillac. Then there are the French foods; the area grows superb fruit, including apples, cherries, peaches, nectarines and strawberries. Agen is Europe's premier plum growing centre, while pate de foie gras is a farm staple here.

Our local Chateau is renowned for its friendly welcome to all the family and for its excellent restaurant. Their summer kitchen serves light lunches round the pool whilst in the evenings nouvelle cuisine is popular in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Other local restaurants are well patronised and of good quality.

Quercy is renowned for some fine art collections, chateaux, hilltop villages, pretty stone built houses, and more rivers than you can shake a stick at. There are also music festivals throughout the holiday season, celebrating a rich diversity from African and reggae music, to jazz, both modern and traditional, and classical concerts as well.

We give details of local places to see and things to do in our information files in the cottages, and there is a local Tourist Information centre in Montaigu-de-Quercy. This village is about four miles away and as well as a market on Saturdays, it has an outdoor leisure area with a large lake with three white sand beaches to swim from, whilst also offering a good selection of other leisure activities. Entry costs just a few Euros.

Shops for most things can be found here too, but in Roquecor (with its own market on Sundays) there is an excellent general store. They sell baguettes, croissants and a selection of excellent local vegetables and salad stuffs. Browse in markets, laze in the sunshine, walk, ride, canoe, cycle, do whatever you like and you will relax. The lifestyle is slow and contagious. Perhaps that's why people in the country around Toulouse live longer than anywhere else in Europe.

Just a line to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Pigeon Cottage. Everything was perfect, the cottage, the weather and surrounding area. Many thanks for your "welcome pack"...thoroughly enjoyed by us both. Our eldest son, Keith, managed to join us from Cologne and echoes our sentiments on a superb choice of holiday accommodation.

We also enjoyed Lynda's wonderful meals on a couple of occasions. We have some excellent photos to remind us and, no doubt, more when Karen, Paul and family return home. Once again many thanks and congratulations on location, decor and equipment.

We would like to thank you for the nice holiday we spent at your house. The place is really beautiful and quiet. We were able to enjoy everything that you put at the disposal of your guests: swimming pool, garden, the table tennis ... We would also like to congratulate you for the care you are taking regarding the refurbishment of your two houses and their level of equipment. We will not forget our holiday in this beautiful region. Thank you again.
See you soon I hope

Jennie and Noel, We had an absolutely brilliant time and it really was a home from home.  We made many little trips to all the medieval villages and some days just enjoying the pool.  We particularly loved the farmers markets and the nearby village of Montique de Quiercy was just lovely and the fact that the lake is so convenient to the cottages was just great.

Glenn and Brigid deserve a special mention and were truly excellent with a lovely manner and very helpful with any query we had. I would have no hesitation in recommending the cottages.

We have enjoyed two holidays at the cottages.  There is everything there anyone could want, including a gas BBQ and a swimming pool. The location is very rural and offers peace and quiet, but is within easy distance of a large number of places to visit.  More than two cars on the local roads would be  considered a traffic jam! Should a problem arise, Glenn and Bridget are just across the road to get things sorted in a trice.  There is a lot of wild life and one evening we were lucky enough to come across a Bambi grazing on the road up to the cottages. It is a perfect location for an extended family holiday, using both cottages. Noel and Jenny, the owners, seem to have thought about everything that could be needed and we love being there.
