Cottage for Two in a Wine Growing Village
This cottage is in the quiet wine growing village of Meloisey ( 300 people) situated in the 'Hautes Cotes de Beaune'. Meloisey is 8 miles from Beaune,and 5 miles from Pommard and Meursault. The setting is very quiet with immediate access to country walks in rolling hills, which take you through the vineyards, with views to cliffs at 1500 feet.
It is centrally heated and attached to the owners house, a winemakers house - about 200 years old-, and is both near the centre of village (50 m from 13th century church), and near to the countryside (50m in the other direction). About Meloisey in Côte-d'Or, Burgundy
You will be well placed to visit:
- Beaune, the ancient capital of Burgundy, which retains a large part of its original city walls. The Charity Hospital (Hotel Dieu) founded in 1443 is one of the most visited tourist attractions in France. It was still being used as a hospital until the 1970's! Not to be missed! Also see the 15th century home of the Dukes of Burgundy, which now houses the wine museum.
- Dijon is less than an hour away and is a more bustling university town, which blends old and new. The old palace of the Dukes of Burgundy houses a fabulous Musee des Beaux Arts.
Other much visited sites in the region are:
- Fontenay 12th century monastery which is remarkably well preserved and is accredited by the World Heritage UNESCO;
- Cormatin 17th century stately home with sumptuous decoration inside , and grand gardens
- Chateauneuf 14th century castle which because of its size, and location dominates the region
- Alésia where Vercingétorix united the tribes of France, and nearly beat Julius Cesar
- Autun with many souvenirs of its importance in Roman times
- Although for us, the real charm is in the small old villages, nestling in the middle of the vines, with stone houses, old churches, restored lavoirs, which have not changed significantly for generations. Included in our favourites are Monthelie, Volnay, Aloxe-Corton, Clos Vougeot.
