Architect's Villa, Amazing Sea Views, Footpath to Beach, Private Pool

The villa is situated between St Tropez and Toulon, in the French village of Rayol-Canadel which is just off the Corniche des Maures, a 26km coastal road that stretches from Lavandou to La Croix-Valmer.

The sea views all along the Corniche are breathtaking. On the land side rises the Massif des Maures covered with pine, chestnut, cork oak, mimosa and eucalyptus trees. A small road 5 minutes from the villa leads to the Col and the ridge path, superb for walking, cycling and picnics with vast blue vistas below. From the villa a traffic-free path leads 400m to a sandy beach.

By a miracle this part of the coast has escaped urban development and still feels like "la campagne". The intense light and colour that drew Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso and Van Gogh, still cast a spell and the idyllic Îles d'Or still beckon.

Our list when we started looking for a villa was that it was a short walk to a safe sandy beach with no roads to cross or the need most days to use a car. Space was the second priority. Outside, a garden not overlooked, not manicured and diverse to give different age groups some privacy. Inside light, space and as little division between house and garden as possible. As academics we needed something affordable, comfortable but non-flash. We enjoy sharing holidays with family and friends so we searched for a set up that made hospitality easy while allowing guests maximum freedom. We had almost given up when we found La Lézardière.

Built into the side of a hill, the main living space is on the first floor. There is a bedroom wing and a living/dining/ kitchen wing both opening onto a courtyard with a pepper tree. The garden on the living room side has a gated and landscaped private pool. Parasols, sun bathing mattresses and chairs for use around the private pool.

On the bedroom side there is a woodland garden with big cork oaks, mimosa, eucalyptus, arbutus, cacti and shrubs. Below this side of the house is the entrance area with parking space for several cars.

Long Winter Lets

The villa is available for long lets. It has full central heating, amazing sea views from most windows and mimosa, lemon, orange, eucalyptus and lavender in the walled garden. An off-season rent is offered for caring guests who will enjoy waking to sound of waves and sun dancing on the bay. It is a lovely place to work, recuperate and reflect.

About Rayol Canadel Sur Mer in Var, Provence - Cote d'Azur

At the end of our garden is the old Chemin de Fer de Provence, closed to traffic and safe for walking or cycling. It leads to the Canadel cove beach and then on to Rayol, which has several food shops, 2 or 3 small restaurants, newspapers, office de Tourisme, bus station. Large outdoor market on Friday morning. On a headland owned by French National Trust is the Jardin Botanique. Guides explain the Mediterranean flora . Outdoor classical music concerts in the summer.

Should the domestic scene prove too much, stroll down to the Relais des Maures which has a big terrace, food, drinks and a chance to meet other people. From June to September, the Club Tropicana bordering the beach serves lunch, dinner and has live music.

Trips to Îles d'Or (des Hyère) - run year round

These protected islands are said to be the essence of the Mediterranean. Exuberant scented Provençal flora, silver beaches, translucent seas, hot sun. No cars allowed but bikes can be taken on the ferry or hired in Porquerolles, the largest island. Here you can picnic, swim and hike in a magic landscape. The middle island, Port Cros, is a marine, butterfly and insect reserve, the smallest of the French national parks. Levant, the third, has giant geraniums, nasturtiums eucalyptus, a naturist colony and a couple of small expensive hotels for over night stays. For times and ferry fares, ring tourist office at Rayol, Lavandou or Hyeres.

If you decide to go

We will send a list of our best tips for where to shop, wine and dine plus hiking together with maps to show location of the House and how you will be met.

How To Get To Rayol Canadel Sur Mer in Var, South of France and the Riviera

By Road

From Calais, 10-11 hours plus stops ( 725 miles ) The A 26 avoids Paris and is less busy than the A 1 and the Autoroute du Soleil. Another option is the Portsmouth/Caen ferry and the under used A 71/75 with a stop at Chartres or Orleans as a carrot!

By Air

  • Toulon- St Tropez: Ryanair flies here from Stansted. The airport is modern, small and within 40 minutes of the house. Hertz and Avis on site. Also a bus from the airport stops just above our garden.
  • Marseille - scheduled services by BA, Air France, Easy Jet. If hiring a car at airport about 2/3 hours to our villa.
  • Nice - a little closer with more airlines.

By Train

Eurostar and TGV will get you from London to Toulon in 6.5 hours and in comfort. Also overnight couchettes. Rent a car at station or hop on St Tropez bus from in front of the station - it stops very near our house.

Guest Reviews Of La Lezardiere

Our family of 4 (including 2 young children) spent two very happy weeks here in July 2009. The house has beautiful views and is superbly located. It is very comfortable and is well-equipped - you feel you are in a friend's home rather than a rental property. The house and garden are well designed, with the pool close to the house. Everything was immaculate on arrival, and the charming lady who cleans also provides a reliable babysitting service (for whole days as well as evenings). The owner went to great lengths to check that we had all that we needed and were enjoying our stay.

The local area is well worth the (in places) grinding drive from Nice airport: it is unspoilt and laid-back compared to the more developed areas of the Cote d'Azur, and the proximity of the house to Le Rayol is a huge "plus" because it has all that you need for your stay, removing the need for supermarket trips to big towns. We have already booked our return visit and hope to become regulars. La Lezardiere is a very special place for a holiday!

We were thoroughly impressed by your holiday home and its captivating location; it was particularly atmospheric when the "mistral" shook the shutters and swished the palms. The mimosa and acacia were in bloom, the Domaine was lovely and Sunday lunch at the Maurin des Maures was a great experience. We also liked Ramatuelle and Bormes and were taken with the Signacs at L'Annonciade.

Striking views over the sea and Islands from some bedrooms and the giant living area as well as from the paved terraces and nooks outside. There are good walks on car free roads down to the beach and past other beautiful houses.

We stayed in winter and found most restaurants nearby to be closed so appreciated the amazingly well equipped kitchen for home cooking. Central heating is also useful for cold winter days. Good for a large group, we were only 6 adults and a baby, must bring more of the family next time. Even found some toys for the baby. The caretakers keep the house gleaming and were smiling and helpful in spite of our woeful French.

Larger towns nearby such as Cavalaire and St Maxime had supermarkets and restaurants open during winter. Historic towns such as Grimaud in the nearby hills. Some roads in the Alpes behind Rayol have great views and exciting walks but are not for the faint hearted.

Beautiful house, beautiful weather – we couldn’t be happier. Thanks, Clare, for thinking of every possible detail and the best equipped kitchen we’ve ever seen! We ate here most evenings on the terrace but our favourite lunching place is Tamaris Plage, just down the road in Pramousquier. Fabulous view and delicious food. Hate to leave and hope we can return next year!

Thanks for letting us share your beautiful home. Absolute delight to invite our guests to this wonderful place, to spend a holiday together. Everyone had their preferred corner of paradise. My husband, who’d forgotten his knives (chefs never take a holiday without) couldn’t believe you had the same as him.

My 6 year old lived in the pool pretty much the whole fortnight. Family from the UK sought the shady corners and played games under the trees, whilst our French family lay like lizards on the terrace whilst the 4 year old had to sit just above the painted sign on the tree house just to prove a point, and play with her dolls.

As for me: after two weeks of quick showers a decadent bath with a view on the next to last night was bliss, also morning coffee beneath the pepper tree, the air full with the scent of Franzipan, and the beautiful yellow flowers on the tree which overhangs the far end of the pool, which opened this last week. Beautiful memories of hot sunshine and time spent en famille.

We love this place! It has been an unforgettable experience and we don’t want to leave! The ambiance of this house is pristine – the large French windows looking out across the sparkling sea has provided the perfect place for a magical family holiday. So many areas to escape to throughout this divine house. Days spent diving off nearby rocks into the crystal, aquamarine waters of the Mediterranean. Returning to the cool refuge of the house to read by the pool or in the shady hammock. After a couple of expeditions to local restaurants it soon became obvious there was no real need to leave. Preferring barbeque's by the pool or cooking in the well-equipped kitchen. We would love to come back one day!!

The house is beautiful and easily accommodated the 14 people in our family with privacy and communal space for a happy holiday.  The owners have thoughtfully provided a very well appointed kitchen. We are happy to recommend this property to large groups but the house is too big for just two people so bring your friends..

Eight adults and two toddlers spent a week here in the middle of September. We found the villa everything that it cracked itself up to be - wonderful position, beautiful views, well equipped. Our problem was that we spent too much time on the beach to take advantage of all the facilities - though we did play fierce games of table tennis.

The pool was plenty big enough for us, sometimes they are very narrow, and there was room for most of us to laze around it - which was fine because there were always people and children in it. The eyrie at the top of the property was the most magnificent place to get away from everyone - particularly at bed time with a book and a bottle of wine - or just to look at the sea.

The sea really was only 10/15 minutes walk away - though we tended to go with friends to the next beach west, where the sand was yellower and there was more activity to watch. It was possible to push a buggy in the evening to the local pizza place, and even to the beach cafes - though we tended to eat at home, outside the kitchen by the barbecue or on the terrace with the view.

Everything worked properly, there was masses of kitchen equipment with really large saucepans and frying pans, lots of plates, bowls and cutlery. The ice machine on the fridge was very popular. Once we got the magic codeword the internet worked more efficiently than home!

The caretaker was very helpful when the family arrived and showed them exactly how everything worked. She arrived when she said she would to take the keys on our last day. She will babysit, but by the time we asked her she was already booked - not a problem as the French don't worry about children in the sort of places we went to en masse.
