Martin Pecheur
The name of this house means “Kingfisher” – you will notice them on the Cele river, in fact, standing in the garden of Martin Pecheur, there is such a splendid view of the river that a pair of binoculars is essential! The house is a quaint former wheelwrights cottage, where the hubs of cartwheels were hand turned on a lathe in what is now the kitchen.
Situated in the small, quiet village of Sauliac sur Cele, this comfortable stone house is in a perfect setting, surrounded by the high limestone plateaux. In springtime you will discover a huge array of butterflies and wild flowers. Buzzards, black kites, and many other European birds can be seen close at hand, as can the red squirrel and deer. Wild boar live in the forests all around, and if you are lucky you may see them as they roam the hills at dusk. The cliffs at Sauliac are a protected habitat for peregrine falcons and eagle owls, one of which was seen in the gite garden a couple of years ago.

The south facing garden has a secluded terrace with table and chairs, which profits from the shade of a lovely plum tree. There is also a gas barbecue. At the bottom of the garden is the 4 ½ metre diametre above ground swimming pool., The house and terrace have lovely views over the river and garden, which has a lawn, flowerbeds and shrubs. The pool has decking around it at the same height as the water for easy access. For extra security (and now required by law) it is also protected from the rest of the garden by a fence.
You will also find 4 mountain bikes and sunloungers for your use.
There is parking for one car in front of the house. There is also further parking in the quiet village square just 50 metres away.
For your comfort and convenience, the house will be cleaned to a high standard prior to your arrival. All bedding and tea towels are provided. Mains electricity, bottled gas and logs are also included in your weekly tariff. Towels however are not provided, but can be if requested, at an extra charge.
Pets are welcomed.
The property is 20 miles from Figeac, the main market town on the river Cele, and only 11 miles from St. Cirq Lapopie, a beautiful medieval village built high on the rocks above the River Lot (reputably one of the most picturesque villages in the whole of France), with its many local artisan shops, together with a wide variety of restaurants. 25 miles to the south west, is the city of Cahors, which is the Prefecture (capital) of the region. It is easy to reach the local markets and interesting or historical places from Martin-Pecheur, and, in fact, the valley roads are great for cycling as even in the height of summer, the roads are extremely quiet.
See Local guide and map for information on nearby towns and facilities.
The Gîte is situated between Cahors, the departmental capital, and Figeac, along the Cele valley.
By Car - It will probably take about 9 hours from Calais.
By Plane - Ryanair do cheap flights to Rodez (the nearest airport), Limoges, Bergerac and Carcassonne. Easyjet fly in to Toulouse with reasonably priced flights. British Airways and Air France fly to Toulouse but are more expensive, however, if you look in advance on the internet you can now also find cheaper flights with BA. You will need to hire a car as there is no public transport in the area.
By Rail - Eurostar to Paris, then express train to Cahors. Car hire is available just opposite the station.
By Coach - Eurolines run a fairly cheap coach service from London to Cahors, but again you will need transport once you arrive.
Full details on how to find the gîte will be sent to you.
