Home description

The maisonette is situated in Port Leucate, a charming resort, less than 30 mins from both the historic city of Perpignan, the capital of the Pyrenees Orientales, and Rivesaltes airport.  It is beside the Etang de Salses, (a large salt water lake, ideal for watersports, especially windsurfing), and is 5-10 mins. leisurely walk to the Blue Flag standard Mediterranean beach.

The property is south facing, making maximum use of the sun, and has a large awning, for when it gets hot, (the Languedoc enjoys 300+ days of sunshine per year. It is beside a car park, for ease of access.

The maisonette comprises:

Ground Floor:

• Kitchen/living area - with fridge, washing machine, microwave, and small cooker, and all the necessary utensils.  There is a bed settee, and television, and a dining table and chairs.
• Cabine bedroom - (with bunk beds) is to the rear.
• Shower room - with toilet. 

First Floor:

• Mezzanine - there is a double bed, and another bed settee.

Outside:

There is a barbecue available together with patio furniture.

About the location

The entire area is very picturesque, and Port Leucate is situated between beautiful mountains, and the Mediterranean. The roads are excellent, for those who wish to explore further afield, with the historic and vibrant cities of Carcasonne, Montpellier, Toulouse, and Nimes all within 2 hours easy driving.

Being situated so close to the Spanish border, both Gerona, (1hr), and Barcelona (2hrs) are easily reached, via the N9. The 9th wonder of the world, the Millau bridge is also within 2hrs drive, (but only for those with a head for heights. The famous Canal du Midi, as seen in the chef Rick Stein's  "French Odyssey" is a good day trip, as is Andorra, high in the Pyrenees, where you can shop tax-free.

The mountains of both the Corbieres, and Alberes ranges are a stunning backdrop to the area with ancient villages dotted throughout, some of them have natural hot springs – very relaxing. The air is thought to be the cleanest in Europe, and this lends itself to the high standard of wines produced throughout the region.

How to get here

By air

• Perpingnan - less than 30 minutes away by car
• Toulouse - approximate 2 hours away
• Montpellier - about 1 ½ hours drive
• Carcassonne - just over an hour by autoroute
• Nimes - the other side of Montpellier so about two hours
• Barcelona - 1 ½ to 2 hours away

By train

It is possible to reach Perpingnan in a day from the UK using train via the tunnel.  For Port Leucate there is a (local) railway station about 15 km away in Leucate-La Franqui or of course Perpingnan.  The TGV goes as far as Narbonne.

By car

It is possible to drive to the south in a day from the French side of the channel.  It is about an eleven hour drive using the auto routes although an overnight stop might be judicious!  Alternatively, all the airports have car hire facilities (see above), best booked in advance to get the best value.
