Home description

Where is it

Charente

Les Frasers is a very large traditional stone built Charentaise property, of considerable character. Its grounds of approximately 2 acres are totally enclosed by stone walls. There are many original features remaining of the château out of whose ruins the property was built in about 1830. Les Frasers offers an exceptional opportunity to enjoy the characterful delights of La Courade .

This charming heritage listed hamlet of just 8 houses boasts a double arched gate dating back to before 1647 and is situated in an area surrounded by cognac vines and fields of sunflowers etc, with fine views down the Charente valley.

Les Frasers is offered as a private self-catering house, suitable for groups of up to 12 persons, including children.

The house is a most attractive, large property in traditional Charentais style, with a number of buildings set around two large grassed courtyards, and an additional very large paddock.

Entering via massive iron gates, the central courtyard, which is reached through an archway under the main house, features a number of mature cypress and other trees, and a large barbecue area. This courtyard has entrances to the main house, several barns and also to the table tennis/games room.

The swimming pool is located in the totally enclosed paddock. Toddler-safe access is via a lockable pool-room, or through a lockable gate into the paddock. The pool area features a large (10mx5m) pool and small childrens' pool. The two pools are paved all around, and a large covered pergola provides a great deal of shade on those very hots sunny days and runs along the length of the main pool. Beyond the pools an enormous paddock provides space for all sorts of games. Pets are allowed at the owners discretion.

About the location

In "Charming Charente" - situated between Cognac, with its famous brandy "chais" and the Gallo-Roman city of Angoulême, just north of Jarnac, a beautiful little town on the Charente river, is La Courade. Charente is the second sunniest part of France with some 2400 hours of sunshine per annum, but rarely too hot or too cold. Spring and autumn are very attractive and one can eat outside regularly from March through November.

The region provides a wealth of good food, fine wine and a range of historic buildings. La Rochelle and Royan are an hour away with the bridge to Isle D'Oléron a little further. But you need not visit the bustling Atlantic coast as the Charente River is specially delightful for picnics, canoeing or boat-trips. The river is easily navigable from Angoulême, through Jarnac and Cognac to Saintes, the city of art and history.

Sightseeing favourites include:

The Roman Amphitheatre, the excellent Zoo at Royan, the wildlife-park in the Chizé forest, the chocolate factory and the paper mill near Angouleme, the Chateaux of La Rochefoucauld and La Roche Courbon, the Aquarium at La Rochelle, the Resistance village of Ouradour, the pre-historic grottos at Queroy, the magical Futuroscope (the most successful leisure park in Europe), scenic Venise Verte and many abbeys, churches, mansions and mediaeval villages of interest.
