This charming two bedroom cottage with a large garden at the end of a lane with views of the vines, is the perfect retreat. Only a few minutes from the two pretty villages of Aujac and Authon with the obligatory boulangeries, bar and shop.

Accommodation detail

The house is a traditional Charentaise design and faces south. The thick stone walls and traditional shutters keep the interior cool in the Summer; however, the house is electrically centrally-heated should this be necessary early or late in the year.

The accommodation is all on ground level and comprises a large extremely well-equipped kitchen/dining room, a sitting room with two sets of French doors which lead onto the garden and two comfortable bedrooms.

• Kitchen/Dining Room equipped with a gas cooker, fridge/freezer, microwave, washing machine and dishwasher. If you are keen to cook there are French cookery books (in English!) for you to use when you return from the local markets laden with local produce!
• Sitting Room - A spacious room with comfortable sofas and a TV and DVD with English satellite TV.
• Bedroom One - This comprises a double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside cabinets and a full-length mirror.
• Bedroom Two - This bedroom has two 3-foot wide single beds, a wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside cabinets and a full-length mirror.
• WC/Shower Room with a shower cubicle and WC with sink and mirror.

Outside

From June until end of August there is totally exclusive use of a surface pool 4.4.m across and 1.2 m deep with a removeable ladder for safety.

There is a table and 6 chairs, two reclining loungers, a sun lounger, a barbecue and two mountain bikes for adults (you can hire children's bikes at the small town of Matha 10 minutes away).

A large wooden play frame will keep children occupied while the grownups relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

There are fruit trees (apple, plum, cherry and pear) for you to eat or cook with and the garden is bordered by a stream which is not fenced off.

Babies

The owners can provide a high-chair and cot if necessary, just let them know on booking.

About the location

The house is in the department of Charente Maritime with the stunning beaches of La Rochelle, Royan and Chataillon Les Plages only an hours drive away.

Cognac with its wealth of culture and wonderful restaurants – and of course, its world-famous Cognac houses such as Remy Martin and Hennessy is only 20 minutes drive through the most beautiful countryside.

A must is a visit to the medieval town of St Jean D'Angely with its market on a Wednesday and Saturday which is famous for seafood. Half an hour to the south west is the Roman town of Saintes with its wonderfully preserved amphitheatre.

This department is well-known for its microclimate, and next to the Cote D'Azur, is the sunniest region in the whole of France.

How to get here

Travel by car and autoroute approximately 4 hours drive from St Malo, 5 hours from Caen and 6 hours from Cherbourg or Le Havre.

La Rochelle is approx one hour by air from Southampton and a little more from Birmingham and Stansted. The house is then one hour's drive from the airport.

There is also the  Eurostar and TGV train to Angouleme with one change from London at Lille.

Additional price information

• All prices are per week from Saturday to Saturday.
• Weekly rental charges are inclusive of water, electricity and bottled gas.
• A deposit of 25% is payable on booking with the remainder to be paid no later than 8 weeks prior to the start of the rental period.  There is a returnable deposit of 200 Euros to be paid to the caretaker on arrival.
• We are sorry but we do not accept pets and this is a non-smoking household.
