Lourmarin is a pretty medieval village nestled under the green Luberon hills and surrounded by vineyards, cherry orchards and olive-groves. It is much visited in its own right and provides an ideal base from which to explore the region: Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Arles, the villages of the Luberon and beyond.

A delightful, tastefully and comfortably furnished one bedroom apartment with terrace, in a restored 17th century village house in Lourmarin, in the Luberon (Provence). Lourmarin is officially classified as "one of the most beautiful villages in France" and is ideally situated for touring the area which is famous for its scenery, its villages and its history.

The previous owners, a Parisian couple of writers and editors, who used the apartment as a weekend retreat, sold it to us with many of their possessions. It is tastefully and comfortably furnished with a mixture of antiques, objects d'art, bric à brac and a lot of books. There is a comfortable modern bed, a T.V, and an audio cassette player with an extensive collection of taped music.

This one bedroom apartment provides ample accommodation for a couple and comprises:

Ground floor

• Small private laundry room - with washing machine and tumble drier

First floor

• Kitchen / sitting / dining room - opens onto a small south facing terrace overlooking the village church and a fountain. The corner kitchen has a fridge-freezer, 2 electric hot-plates, a toaster oven, and a good supply of kitchen utensils.

Second floor

• Double bedroom - an oak-beamed room with a small ensuite bathroom which has a modern shower cabinet.

Outside

The first floor open onto a south facing terrace with lovely views.

About the location

The Luberon Natural Regional Park, where Lourmarin is situated, is in the Vaucluse department. It is famous for its scenery, its villages and its history. Lourmarin itself lies on the southern side at the mouth of the pass which separates the Petit (Western) from the Grand (Eastern) Luberon. It is very well placed for exploring some of the hidden valleys and "perched" hill-top villages of the area, e.g. Gordes, Menerbes, Roussillon. .

North of here lies the 13th century Cistercian abbey of Sénanque and its lavender fields, the fashionable village of Gordes, or the ochre quarries and ochre-coloured houses in Roussillon. Within easy reach are the walled city of Avignon with its Palais des Papes (Popes' Palace) and  Aix-en-Provence, a beautiful spa town famous for its café terraces shaded by plane trees. Arles, with its Roman amphitheatre and medieval cathedral and  Cassis,   boat rides, beaches & scuba-diving,  all  make pleasant day-trips, as do the Côtes-du-Rhône vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Gigondas . You can also go westwards to the Camargue, a unique  National wildlife  Reserve  with plenty to see for bird-watchers and nature-lovers.

How to get here

By car from Avignon, take the A7 autoroute following the  signs towards Marseilles. Come off the Autouroute  A7 at Sénas (exit 26) and follow signs for Aix-en-Provence, and Pertuis.

From the Aix-en-Provence TGV station, take the D9 towards Aix, then the A 51 towards Pertuis, following signs to Cavaillon.
