Where is it

Mayenne

English run farmhouse and gite located on a one and a half acre plot in an idyllic and peaceful rural setting.  Bordering the regions of Normandy and western Loire on the edge of the Alpes Mancelles, Coulonge can be easily reached from Caen, St Malo and Cherbourg. The small market town of Villaines-la-Juhel is only 10 minutes drive away.

The properties are extremely child friendly.  At any one time only one property will be let (i.e. the house or the gite).  Larger groups will of course be able to occupy both properties simultaneously (house and gite) and enjoy exclusive use of the whole property.

The properties are spacious and have been renovated to a high standard and feature original stone walls and beams.  The local baker calls 3 times a week and fresh milk is available daily from the local farm.

Coulonge offers something for everyone during every season from outdoor living in summer to cosy winter nights in front of the log burning stove.  A diverse range of country activities are available locally but within a 2 hour drive are the Atlantic coast beaches, Paris and a host of other attractions such as Versailles, Rouen, Chartres, Loire valley and not least motor racing at Le Mans.

About the location

Alpes Mancelle (5 minutes) - an area of outstanding beauty. The Alpes are renowned for many walking and cycling routes that attract all ages throughout the year along with canoeing on the beautiful Sarthe River.

Villaines-la-Juhel (10 minutes) - has restaurants, bars, plenty of shops, a pharmacy and supermarket, swimming pool, indoor tennis courts and communal boules pitch. The town is a tasteful blend of old and new with modern art marble statues and handsome century old houses.

St Ceneri-le-Gereiis (10 minutes) - all the tourist books say that this is the 'prettiest village in France' The church sits overlooking the village and a short walk will enable you to watch the local artist at work. There is a very pleasant creperie, bar and restaurant.

Sille-le-Guillame (15 minutes) - The old town of Sille has its very own chateau which can be reached through the narrow winding streets. There are many shops, bars and restaurants. The famous Sille lake must not be missed. Here you can either relax on the sandy beach with a long cold drink, or if you feel more energetic, hire a windsurfer or pedal boat, go fishing, swimming, sailing or explore the walking and cycling tracks through the forest.

For a day at the beach, it's only 90 minutes to any of the three coastal beaches. In the opposite direction a drive to the beautiful Loire river valley takes about the same time.

Bagnoles-de-L'orne (25 minutes) - the town of the horse. It is also a spa town and has many visitors looking to cure their ailments. You can watch the abseilers practise their moves on the steep rocks near the spa. If you are feeling lucky, why not visit the casino or even have a flutter on the horses as there is a racecourse and equestrian centre in the town. Alternatively, have a stroll round the lake with its landscaped gardens or sit at one of the street bars or restaurants and watch life go by.

Le Mans (40 minutes) - has something for everyone. The old part of the town still has its cobbled streets and half timbered buildings where you can watch craftsmen in their workshops. The new town has a modern shopping centre together with exclusive bars and restaurants. Just out of town you can take a drive down the Mulsanne straight, the fastest piece of road in the 24-hour race.

Paris (55 minutes from Le Mans by rail) – enjoy a day or two in one of the world’s most beautiful cities without the hassle of parking.
