Home description

Le Chêne Vert is a lovingly renovated 200 year old Charantaise house in the heart of Cognac and Pineau country, surrounded by vineyards and situated in a quiet hamlet on the edge of Burie, where the aperitif Pineau des Charentes originated in 1589. We are 14 km from Cognac, 20 km from Saintes. In the summer the fields are filled with sunflowers.

Although the setting is peaceful, it is only a ten minute walk into the village with its bar, restaurant and shops.

The Abbaye de Fontdouce, founded in 1111, is a pleasant walk from the house, through vineyards and woods, and the quiet roads are ideal for cycling.

Situated within easy reach of the A10 Paris/Bordeaux motorway and an ideal setting to explore this beautiful rural area of France or break your journey if you are travelling further south. We are only 60km (38 miles) from the Atlantic coast. Slightly further you will find La Rochelle, Ile de Ré, Ile d'Oléron, sand dunes, pine forests and oyster beds.

The house comprises:

• 4 Guest bedrooms - three with double beds and one with twin beds. All the rooms are sunny and each has a private shower room.
• Lounge - original cheminée, with wood-burning fire, and comfortable sofas. We have a selection of books, games for adults and children, videos and music to listen to.
• Dining room - with wood fire, where breakfast and dinner are served.
  

Evening dinner (by prior arrangement) is prepared using fresh local produce. Coeliac and vegetarian meals are prepared by request.

Breakfast is taken in the dining room kitchen or on the terrace.

Garden:

A large secluded garden at the rear provides space to relax or play games.
The south facing sunny terrace at the front of the house has table and chairs.

Cognac - a lovely place to walk around with its old buildings, small shops and cafes. Famous for its Cognac houses - Remy Martin, Martell, Otard and Henessey.

Poitiers - Futuroscope, the magnificent theme park based on 3D technology, with a variety of experiences to suit all ages.

La Rochelle - lovely old harbour with wonderful seafood restaurants, market, beaches, public parks and footpaths and a large aquarium by the old port.

Angouleme - ancient fortified city with a magnificent 12th Century cathedral. The largely pedestrianised city centre has many shops and restaurants.

Saintes - Roman town on the River Charente with shops and cafés and a wealth of Roman architecture.

Royan - here you can find many sandy beaches and seafood restaurants.

How to get here

The house is 1 hour 30 minutes from the airports at Poitiers and La Rochelle, and 1 hour 45 minutes from Bordeaux and Limoges.

Eurostar and the TGV take seven hours from London to Angouleme, where you can hire a car.
