About Vayres in Haute-Vienne, Limousin

The closest town is Rochechouart, which is charming with cobbled streets, a castle and museums open to the public. There are many other castles close by including Chalus where Richard the Lionheart was fatally wounded. In fact the cottage is situated about 100 metres from the 'Coeur de Lion' route which follows the path Richard took collecting supporters for the great crusades.

There are several swimming lakes with beaches in the area, the closest being at St Mathieu approximately 4 miles away. The whole region is well known for peace tranquillity and friendliness. It is often billed as 'the France that time forgot'.

This region offers a real opportunity to sample traditional French country life. There are many village 'feast' days; real social occasions where local artisans and food producers display their wares and meals are taken on long trestle tables under the shade of large trees.

Limoges is the nearest city (about 25 miles), parking is cheap and plentiful and there are shops, restaurants and activities to suit all tastes. Limoges is a very attractive small city situated on the Vienne River and has many quaint, mediaeval areas. It is world renowned for its porcelain and many factory shops can be found.
