Where better to stay than in Villes sur Auzon - a typical village of rural Provence yet within easy reach of all that there is to see and explore in this remarkable area. Around 40 minutes east of the A7 motorway exits at Orange and Avignon Nord, at the foot of the Gorge de la Nesque and en route to the lavender fields of Sault, each of the apartments is just perfect for two.

Choose from two really comfortable and entirely independent village apartments, both thoughtfully equipped to a very high standard and with off-road parking. The visitor's book is full of very contented reports but the greatest recommendation is people coming back for a second, third or even fourth stay since we started in 2004.

Everything is prepared for a warm welcome. We have included a CD/cassette player with an assortment of CD's, a selection of books, maps, local information and guidebooks. The bed is made, there are  fresh flowers in the vase and a complimentary bottle of the local wine to help you unwind  from the moment you arrive - just bring the books you've been longing to catch up on and some of your favourite music for a perfect holiday 'home from home!'

Set in a quiet lane Le Portail Vert is a gentle stroll away from the village amenities which include 2 bakeries, 2 grocers, newsagent, tennis courts, swimming pool, two bars, three restaurants and a cave selling the delicious local wine. In fact, Villes sur Auzon has almost everything you need for day-to-day comforts. The village is surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, and orchards of apricots, cherries and peaches. Nearby is a freshwater swimming lake with a sandy beach. It is a stunning area for walkers, cyclists, artists and photographers.

Le Portail Vert offers two apartments:

• Tilleul - first floor apartment and terrace   
• Hibiscus - ground floor apartment and private courtyard

Accommodation detail

The first floor apartment is called Tilleul or linden tree - one grows beside the terrace and the scented flowers are picked in June then dried to make a refreshing tea

The south-facing terrace, with table, chairs and parasols, is ideal for enjoying sunny breakfasts and warm evenings. French windows lead in to:

• Living room - tastefully furnished with a comfortable two-seater sofa, large armchair and a dining table for 4.
• Kitchen - separate and fully fitted in cheery provençal colours, very well equipped and easy to use with a full sized gas cooker, microwave and washing machine.
• Double bedroom - a pretty room with views to Mont Ventoux.
• Shower room - fully tiled shower room .

 

About the location

There is a feast for the senses every day with a bustling market somewhere such as Bedoin (9km) every Monday while Carpentras (17km) hosts the large Friday market and has a wide variety of shops and restaurants. Places to visit include L'Isle sur la Sorgue, renowned for antiques and brocante, the lavender fields of Sault, the ochres of Roussillon, the abbey at Senanque and of course Avignon, the walled city, offering an abundance of treasures to explore as well as designer chic and international cuisine.

Food is just part of the provençal way of life - wine is very important too! Tour your way through all the villages whose names are so familiar. Gigondas, Chateauneuf du Pape and Beaumes de Venise to name a few, and taste wines from a variety of co-operatives and private vineyards throughout the Côtes du Rhone and Côtes du Ventoux region.

From Roman amphitheatres in Orange, Nimes and Arles to Mediterranean fishing villages like Cassis for a harbour-side lunch - it is all here for you to discover and enjoy at your own pace.
