Visiting the rural Vendée can be described as stepping back fifty years to a more peaceful time. Our bed and breakfast, a substantial and comfortable 19th Century grain merchant's residence in the heart of a real working village near Fontenay-le-Comte, provides an excellent restful holiday base or overnight stopping-off point.

Bed & Breakfast Accommodation at Family Room

Family Room

A spacious room with its own bathroom/WC. Normally used as a double and two singles (cot also available), this room also has its own seating area, tea/coffee-making facilities, a selection of children's toys and books (in both English and French!) and TV/VCR with a selection of English videos.

Ground Floor

• Dining room - the full continental breakfast is served in the dining room where there is seating for eight, plus a high-chair if required.
• Games room - with a pub-sized pool-table, darts-board and a large collection of board-games and paper-backs, ideal for relaxation in the evenings or to keep everyone occupied on those (occasional) rainy days.

Outside

There is a pleasant patio area, with a paddling-pool in high summer, where guests may sit with drinks, lunch or use the barbecue in the evenings as an alternative to dining out. There is a small detached and private garden down a short passage and secure parking off road for several cars.

About L Hermenault in Vendée, Pays de La Loire

Le Grenier is in the heart of the village of L'Hermenault, 11 km NW of Fontenay-le-Comte which is itself 40 km NE of La Rochelle. The La Rochelle basin has its own temperate micro-climate with more sunny days than anywhere else in France except the Riviera.

• The Atlantic coast - Less than an hour away, with beautiful sandy beaches and lots of splendid sailing, of course, at Les Sables d'Olonne and other resorts.
• The Marais Poitevin (Green Venice) - To the South, is a fascinating area of peaceful streams and fens where boats may be hired.
• Mervent-Vouvant - To the East is this renowned forest with its lakes, picnic-areas and plenty of activities such as cycling, swimming and climbing.
• Fontenay-le-Comte - A typical country town of 12,000 with a full range of shops, restaurants and facilities, amongst them a tennis club and two swimming pools, and an excellent Saturday market.

How To Get To L Hermenault in Vendée, North West France

• By Sea - L’Hermenault is about three hours drive from St Malo, within five hours of Caën or Cherbourg, and about 420 miles from the Tunnel or Calais, via Rouen and the new A87.
• By Rail - Eurostar can be taken to Paris or Lille, then TGV to Niort on the La Rochelle line, where an excellent car-hire service is available. There are often bargain prices to be found by booking to/from La Rochelle but alighting at Niort.
• By Air - Ryanair fly the old Buzz routes from London Stansted to both La Rochelle and Poitiers daily, whilst both British Airways and Air France fly several times daily from Gatwick to Nantes, which is about an hour away.
