Situated at a height of 750 m on the lower slopes of the Massif du Canigou in the eastern foothills of the French Pyrenees, Saint Marsal is an unspoilt, medieval French Catalan village, which looks across the plain of Rousillon to the Mediterranean, a mere 45 km away. The Spanish border, accessible across one of France's most spectacular motorway bridges, is similarly only 45 km away. The village has picturesque narrow streets with flowers at every corner and boasts two family-run restaurants, a post office, a little shop selling groceries and freshly baked bread made on the premises, a tennis court and a boules piste. All visitors comment on the friendliness of the village, where they feel especially welcome at the many village fêtes.

Locally called Ca m'suffit, the house is situated next to the church at the top of the village and was originally part of the village 'chateau'. It has recently been redecorated and refurbished.

Ground Floor

• The living room and kitchen with a two-burner electric hob, a washing machine, a multi-function oven, a fridge, an electric kettle, a stereo, a television and a wood-burning fire.
• The shower and toilet

First Floor

• The bedroom on the first floor has a single and a double bed and the bedroom opens onto a balcony. Above this is:
• The large, sunny and completely private roof terrace with magnificent views across the red roofs of the village to the mountains and the sea. On the terrace you'll find a table, chairs, loungers and a barbecue.

Heating is by a wood fire, electric radiator and fan heater. Electricity is included in the price. All bed linen, towels and tea towels are provided. On booking, the owners shall send you further information and a sketch map and there will be someone local to help you over any difficulties.

There is safe parking through an archway next to the church at the foot of the steps leading to the house.

The owners main wish is that you have a wonderful holiday in this fascinating area and they have left information in the house on the many things to see and do in this beautiful corner of Catalonia.

About the location

A walker's paradise

You can walk straight from the house on many paths which lead to beautiful spots where you can see wonderful wild flowers and an amazing variety of butterflies, bird life and even Pyrenean ibex and wild boar. The network of paths takes you to stone-age, bronze-age and Roman sites. The Romans first came here to mine iron in the mountains and iron mining continued into the 20th century. In the hills above St Marsal you can walk along the old mining railway, now a grassy track through beautiful woodlands, and in July each year there is a special celebration of St. Marsal's mining history.

The Grande Randonnee 10 is close at hand and brings you past – or indeed to the summit of – the holy Catalan mountain, the Pic du Canigou, which towers over the area offering an irresistible goal. Of course the whole area is well-known for its medieval castles, forts, monasteries, churches and Cathar strongholds, all bearing witness to the religious struggles and triumphs of bygone centuries. These architectural wonders, many of them perched precariously on dizzying rock faces, can be either the aim of a day's walking or some of the milestones along the way.

How to get here

The airports Perpignan, Gerona and Carcassone are serviced by Ryanair, while Barcelona and Montpelier are serviced by Easyjet and others. All these airports offer extensive car-hire services which can be booked in advance, either by phone or online. The owners have traveled to St. Marsal both from the north of Scotland and from several other European locations – by car, by train, by plane – and can help you with the details. Please be aware that, while the owners have enjoyed visits from friends who cycled to St. Marsal from Barcelona, a car is as good as essential.
