About the location

Uzes is in the heart of the beautiful department of Gard in the Languedoc region.  Within easy reach, for a day's outing are the Gorges of the Ardeche and the Cevennes mountains to the north and the Pont du Gard, Orange, Avignon, Camargue and Mediterranean beaches to the south.  The countryside around Uzes, the Uzege, is a varied mixture of herb scented garrigue interspersed with almond and olive groves, fruit orchards and vineyards.

There are many opportunities to taste the local wines at small privately owned caves and larger village co-operatives.

A wide range of cuisine is available including, India, Chinese, Italian, Creperies, Pizzerias, Tapas bars as well as typical French restaurants. There are large Carrefour and Intermarche hypermarkets on the outside of town as well as a good selection of smaller supermarkets in Uzes itself.
Boulangeries, for bread, croissants and cakes are abundant throughout the town: the nearest being five minutes from the gite.

Uzes itself has been designated one of the most important small medieval towns in France and the pedestrianized centre is a conservation area. With its towers, Cathedral and Duchy (castle) Uzes stands out proudly from the surrounding countryside.
It is a bustling market town, (markets being held on Wednesdays and Saturdays) with local life going on all year round. The Saturday market in the Place aux Herbes is a must for every visitor as it is the biggest in the area. Throughout the season there are countless festivals and exhibitions in the town.
