Note this property was built over 200 years ago and converted from previous uses (such as the old bread oven room now is a large bathroom).  Therefore the property is a bit quirky - people either love or hate this convert feel of a historic house.  There are stairs inside (4 steps inside between upstair and downstair) and outside (many stairs around patio) the house and would not be suitable for someone in a wheel chair or difficulty walking.  As you would expect in the rural area the water is not city water but from a natural souce located on the property.

How To Get To St Jean Du Gard in Gard, South of France and the Riviera

Car:

  • From Paris: (6 hours south to house by car, 3.5 hours to Nimes by TGV fast train. I would recommend taking the TGV train into Avignon or Nimes.) By car take the A6 to Lyon. At Lyon take the A7 towards Avignon. Exit the A7 at Bollene (exit 19) and take the D994 towards Pont-St. Esprit. At Pont-St. Esprit take the N86 towards Bagnols-sur-Ceze. At Bagnols-sur-Ceze take the D6 towards Ales. (see directions from Ales below)
  • From Marseilles / Aix-en-Provence: (travel 1:50 hours northwest to house.) Take the A7 towards Salon-de-Provence. Just before Salon-de-Provence take the A54 towards Nimes. From Nimes take the N106 to Ales. (See directions from Ales below).
  • From Montpellier -(travel 1:30 hours north to house) Take the A9 east to the N113 towards Sommieres and Ales. Follow the N113 to the N110 towards Ales. After Sommieres, stay on the 110 and follow signs for Ales and then Anduze.
  • From Avignon: (travel 1:10 hours west to house) Take the N100 West towards Remoulins. At Remoulins take the D981 through Pont du Gard (a famous Roman acqueduct) to Uzes (a beautiful medieval village). At Uzes, continue on the D981 to Ales. (See directions from Ales below)
  • From Nimes - (travel 50 minutes north to house) Follow the N106 towards Anduze
  • From Anduze - (travel 25 minutes west to house) Bear right at the town centre, cross the bridge and at the roundabout follow the signs for Mialet. Be careful when you reach a village called Geneargue you will need to make a very sharp left turn to stay on the D50 towards Mialet.
  • From Mialet - (travel 10 minutes west to house) Follow the D50 through Mialet and continue towards St. Jean du Gard. About 4 km after Mialet look for a major bridge (Pont des Abarines). Immediately before the bridge on your right is our private drive.
  • From St-Jean-du-Gard: (travel 10 minutes north to house) Follow the signs to Mialet. About 3 km after St-Jean-du-Gard look for a major bridge (Pont des Abarines). Immediately before the bridge on the right is a private road with a metal gate. You will see "the west mill" on the last mailbox. Enter this gate and follow the road to the first house on the right. This is The West Mill! Park in the driveway to the right of the house.

You can find more directions on-line with Mapquest:
The West Mill house is located on the D50 towards Mialet where the road first crosses the river at the bridge "Pont des Abarines."

Closest major station is Nimes (Avignon is also close) other possible train stations include Montpellier, Marseilles or Aix-en-Provence.

  • OFF SEASON LONG-TERM RENTAL AS LOW AS 350 Euros per week (1400 Euros per month)
  • We are always interested in long-term rentals for off season (September - May). Over the years we have had families come and rent our property throughout the winter and sent their children to the local school where they learned French. We charged very little since they were renting for a longer period. We have rented it as low as 1400 Euros per month (which is a 70% savings over normal pricing). This rental had different conditions including the renters paying for electricity but it turned out to be a win-win for everyone. You can ask about the details. If you are interested in long-term off season rental let us know. Minimum period of 2 Month for Long-Term rentals.
