Set on a small quiet square, this elegant town house is built of the pale yellow stone typical of Uzes.  Whilst the façade was built in the 19th Century, the unique feature of this property is its 16th Century stone tower, whose foundations date back to the 12th Century.

The two apartments can be rented separately or together.  They can interconnect, or retain their own separate entrances.

To enter the property you open the huge old wooden door, and enter the tower from the passageway. A flight of well worn stone steps brings you up to the first floor.

Enter into a wonderful high ceilinged living room with its two west-facing windows that overlook Place Austerlitz and down a paved lane to Place Aux Herbes, the main market square of Uzes.  The living room is very comfortable with a table and chairs, window seats, and two sofas, one of which is a sofa bed.

The apartment comes fully equipped with satellite wide-screen television, a DVD and Video player, and a stereo system for CD's and cassettes. There is also an extensive library of DVD's, Video's and CD's for you to enjoy during your stay.

The newly fitted kitchen, elegant with stone counters, is to the rear of the living area through a stone arch. The kitchen is very well equipped with oven, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, and a large refrigerator.

A flight of stairs takes you up to the bedroom, again with two large windows overlooking Place Austerlitz.  The bed can be arranged either as twin beds, or as a super king sized double bed.  The en suite bathroom has a large powerful shower, basin and toilet.

Continue up the winding stone staircase of the tower and you come out onto your private terrace with its magnificent 360 degree panoramic view of Uzes and the surrounding countryside.  It's a perfect place for a morning coffee and croissant, a light lunch and a glass of chilled rose wine, early evening drinks as the sun goes down, or late night star gazing after a pleasant dinner out.

Parking can sometimes be found by the house, but more usually is about 100 yards away in a public parking space.  Or if you prefer, the owners can arrange for you to have garaged parking 10 minutes away.

About the location

Uzes has a rich history dating from the Romans who built an aqueduct from the source of the Eure river at Uzes, then called Ucetia, to supply water to Nimes.  The incredible Pont du Gard, part of this aquaduct, should not be missed.  Following the Romans, the bishops ruled Uzes until the 11th Century, when Uzes became the first duchy of France, and a long period of conflict between the dukes and the clergy ensued throughout the centuries.  The Duchy is open to the public, as are the 17th Century Cathedrale St. Theodorit, and 12th Century Tour Fenestrelle.  The Jardin Medievale with its myriad ancient herbs provides an aromatic pause in the sightseeing.

Special events are held in Uzes throughout the year – festivals of truffles, garlic, wine, plants, silk, books, and antiques.  The excellent festival of modern dance, and the delightful Nuites Musicales d'Uzes (musical nights) take place in July.  In August there is lots of excitement with the bulls running through the streets during the Fete Votive.

The region oozes with culture.  Some of the finest roman remains in Western Europe are right here - the Pont du Gard, and the amphitheatres of Nimes and Orange.

Avignon is about 45 minutes away on the Rhone River, inviting you to come dance "Sur le pont d'Avignon", or visit the impressive 14th Century Popes' Palace.

Montpellier dates over 1000 years and is the most cosmopolitan city of the area.  The ancient narrow streets contrast with the 21st Century designs on the banks of the Lez.  The Place de la Comedie with it cafes that spill out is a wonderful place to relax after a morning's shopping in the countless shops and speciality stores.  A university town, Montpellier is full of students making a very lively place day and night – definitely worth a visit.  It is about an hour and a quarter from Uzes.

How to get here

Uzes is very accessible by road, rail and air.

Ryanair fly daily into both Nimes and Montpellier, 45 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes away respectively.  British Airways also has flights into Marseille, which is about 1 hour 30 minutes away.

The TGV can speed you down to Avignon or Nimes, taking about 2 hours 45 minutes from Paris, and there are even direct trains from London to Avignon during the summer which take only 6 hours 15 minutes.

If you choose to come by car, there are numerous possible motorway routes.  In addition, you can also put your car (and yourselves) on an overnight motor rail train from Calais to Avignon.
