On the edge of the medieval village of Chalabre (near Carcassonne) in Languedoc Roussillon, Southern France. A peaceful rural setting but only 12 minutes walk to the historic village and shops, these two completely refurbished quality apartments are part of a 16th century farmhouse set in 8 acres of rolling meadowland and gardens.

In one direction le Bourdil looks towards Chalabre and its Château, and in the other there are magnificent views of wooded hillsides and the valley of the river l'Hers. Bordered by a small stream, Bourdil provides the perfect spot for relaxation.

Situated in the foothills of the Pyrénées and at the heart of Cathar country, the charming "Bastide" village of Chalabre still displays many of its medieval origins, and is within easy walking distance from Bourdil, a pleasant 12 minutes stroll along a riverside lane.

The two spacious and comfortable self catering holiday apartments with modern kitchens and shower rooms are situated on the first floor with their own separate entrance. During July and August it is also possible to rent the whole house, including the ground floor, which comprises 2 double bedrooms, a vast living area with SKY TV and a huge live-in farmhouse kitchen opening onto the garden. Outside:

You are invited to use the owners' 10m x 5m heated pool with its sun terrace and comfortable pool house where you can relax in the shade or enjoy an aperitif. The pool house has a log fire for the cooler early spring and late autumn evenings. The pool fully complies  with recent French legislation on pool safety and is open from mid-June until mid-September.  Sun loungers, parasols, barbecue and outdoor eating areas are provided and there are boules, a games room with table tennis table, bikes and other outdoor games available.

Holiday Accommodation at Tivoli

Tivoli was also recently renovated and equipped. It measures 420 sq ft and has lovely views towards the village and château. 

The accommodation comprises:

• Kitchen/sitting/dining room (19' x 11') - with a comfortable settee and two armchairs, dining table and chairs, cooker, fridge, coffee maker and toaster.
• Bedroom - has a comfortable double bed, bedside cabinets and wardrobe.
• Shower room - equipped with a thermostatic shower, washbasin with vanity unit & WC.

About Chalabre in Aude, Languedoc Roussillon

The property is in a rural location, on the edge of Chalabre; a village with a full range of shops, including 2 small supermarkets, boulangeries (2) and patisserie, butchers (2), and greengrocers (2) as well as doctors (3), dentist, pharmacies (2), tabac/newsagents (2), a bank with cash dispenser, post office, and hairdressers (2). There is an excellent restaurant serving reasonably-priced lunches and dinners, a couple of bars and a pizza restaurant. Within 20 minutes drive there are large supermarkets at Mirepoix, Limoux and Lavalanet.

In July and August the splendid Château de Chalabre has displays of jousting, swordsmanship, traditional crafts and games.

For lovers of history and legend, a must is the exploration of the many impressive Cathar fortresses nearby, including Puivert and Montségur where in 1244, 225 martyrs chose to be burned at the stake, rather than give up their faith. The area also has some fine caves, offering the opportunity for a subterranean boat trip, or to see the cave drawings of prehistoric man.

Within easy reach by car (45 minutes), is the spectacular Cité de Carcassonne - originally built in the middle ages and later restored by Prosper Mérimée and Eugène Viollet le Duc. Also nearby is the fascinating medieval town of Mirepoix, with its unique 13th century "couverts" or arcades around the main square, home to its superb Monday market; and Limoux, the centre for the sparkling white wine, Blanquette de Limoux.

The Mediterranean is an easy day trip - a visit to Narbonne or Perpignan allows time for a morning of culture, and an afternoon on the beach. Spain and Andorra are also close enough for a day out.

How To Get To Chalabre in Aude, South of France and the Riviera

By road: the excellent French autoroute system will bring you to Castelnaudary, Bram, Carcassonne, or Pamiers, all only a short drive away.

By air: there are "low cost" flights to nearby Carcassonne (45mins), Toulouse (75 mins) and Perpignan (85 mins).
