Home description

This cosy yet light and airy apartment has been restored and furnished in the manner of a Matisse painting with its decorative ironwork, very high ceilings and ancient beams. The living room has two tall french windows which open wide onto the cool and shady plane trees of the Boulevard Gambetta.  The mazzanine bedroom with wooden beams has a wonderful romantic feel with its four poster bed.

The Matisse is the perfect place to relax and have a lazy holiday. Or, if you are feeling a little more energetic a stroll in the shady river valley. A stone's throw from the arcaded Place Aux Herbes with its colourful Saturday market which offers a wealth of fresh local produce - olives, spices, fish, wine and lavender honey. The apartment is ideally placed for visiting Nimes, St. Rémy-de-Provence, Orange, Avignon and Arles, the Camargue with its flamingoes and wild white horses and the mediterranean beaches.

Living Area

A wide stone staircase leads to the 'Matisse' apartment on the second floor of a town house built in the 1820s on the site of the ancient ramparts of Uzès. There is a free car park and a secure underground parking nearby.

The apartment comprises:

• Living room/Dining area - Pale ochre terracotta floor tiles, cool white walls and very high ceilings with old beams. Two sofas, coffee table, easy chair, round marble dining table with decorative iron legs with matching chairs, large mirror and hanging kelim, oil paintings, up lighters with dimmers and glass lamps on walls.  Large ceiling fan to cool the apartment in Summer.
• Internet area -  Small round marble table with decorative iron legs with matching chair.  Wi-Fi connection.
• Corner kitchen - Attractive white cupboards, ceramic hob, extractor fan, oven, fridge/freezer, electric kettle, microwave, coffee perculator, electric toaster, iron and ironing board, vacuum cleaner.  Well equipped kitchen with pots and pans and 6 place settings, serving dishes, and all necessary cooking utensils.
• Bathroom - A  well lit bathroom newly tiled in white terracotta tiles  with over sized bath with overhead shower fitting, WC, hand basin with mirror above, hairdryer, hot water heater.
• Mezzanine bedroom - Old beams divide the bedroom space: on one side of the space is a large wardrobe, easy chair and freestanding lamp.  On the other side a romantic iron four poster bed, 2 iron bedside tables with lamps, chest of drawers, antique mirror. Wooden flooring.

• Roman Pont du Gard (10 mins away) - photographs do nothing to prepare you for the scale and grandeur of this 2000 year old feat of engineering.
• Nîmes (30 mins) - the astonishingly preserved Maison Carré (a Roman temple) and the Arena
• Avignon (30 mins) - the papal palace, bridge, and famous theatre festival.
• Orange (30 mins) - the Roman Theatre and Triumphal Arch.
• Arles (30 mins) - beautiful small city on the banks of the Rhone with a massive Roman arena. and the haunting Alyscamps, a Roman necropolis painted by Van Gogh.
• Les Baux (30 mins) - fantastic medieval fortress built into the rock on the last outpost of the Alpilles range.
• Anduze (40 mins) - 'Gateway to the Cévennes' the Bamboo Garden.
• St Remy de Provence (45 mins) - the asylum where Van Gogh lived for a year after cutting off his ear lobe.
• Ruins of Greco (45 mins) - Roman town of Glanum
• Beaches: La Grande Motte, Grau-du-Roi, or the vast, remote sandy beach of l'Espiguette.
• Montpellier - Place de la Comédie, l'Antigone Post-Modern architecture by Richard Bofill. A lovely city on a human scale.

How to get here

By Car : A7 down Rhone valley to A9. Exit A9 at Remoulins signed for Pont du Gard, Uzes and Ales. Follow signs to Uzes.

By Air : Ryanair flies to Nimes and Montpellier.

By Rail : Eurostar goes to Avignon without changing on Saturdays during the summer. For dates and availability contact Eurostar direct. Or change at Lille for Avignon or Nimes.
