Home description

This elegant early 18th Century chateau, set in 5 hectares of lovely parkland, is also a comfortable family home. It is surrounded by open countryside but only 6 miles from Tours and 1 mile from Golf d'Ardrée.

It is well situated for visiting the chateaux of the Loire Valley and the wine regions such as Vouvray, Chinon, St Nicolas de Bourgueil. The village of Saint-Antoine-du-Rocher even has its own megalithic dolmen, troglodyte house, and an ancient chapel in the rockface.

Its construction dates from 1705 when Joseph Aubry, Marquis of Castelnau, Lord of le Plessis, Lieutenant general of the Touraine, and Mayor of Tours decide to live at le Plessis. His son Joseph Jean Aubry, President of the Finance office of Tours and Mayor was Ecuyer and Advisor to the king.

The house, which is full of history, was the home, of Eugene O'Neill (famous American playwright, Nobel prize winner, 1888-1953) who rented the chateau from May 1929 to May 1931, and spent many hours writing Mourning Becomes Electra. At the beginning of his stay he married Carlotta Monterey. Among the guests were Lillian Gish (famous American actress) and George Jean Nathan. The chateau was the also home to the Bulgarian Embassy during the 2nd World War.

The owners Elizabeth and Gil Barrios (she is British and he is French) will welcome you and share with you "la vie de chateau". They will be able tell you all the history of the property and can advise you on places to visit . They can also recommend restaurants and caves for wine tasting.

Accommodation

The chateau has been recently redecorated and furnished with original items.

There are two bedrooms available, each are air conditioned and have their own sitting room area, ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower, washbasin, bath and separate toilet.

Outside there is a heated swimming pool 15 x 6m (50ft x 20ft), grass tennis court, pond and stream, kitchen garden, plantation of trees and original gazebo.
