This beautiful property retains its original features, including high ornate plaster ceilings, marble entrance hall, marble fireplaces and a huge stained glass window portraying four churches of the area. There is over 650sqm of living space and one could easily get lost in the myriad of rooms. The property has been renovated to a high standard and tastefully furnished in keeping with its era.

The garden has been landscaped, a new heated pool (with alarm)  and hot tub installed.

On the ground floor there is a large marble entrance hall, two lounge/sitting rooms each with parquet flooring, carved wooden panels and marble fireplace, a fully stocked library, also with marble fireplace, a study/playstation room and cloakroom. There is a huge dining room with original beams and spectacular open fireplace, adjoining the newly fitted kitchen which has American fridge-freezer, dishwasher, oven and hob and microwave. There is a laundry room in the basement with washing machine, tumble dryer and drying area.

The first floor can be accessed by either the impressive main staircase, with its ornate stained glass arch, or by the "servants" staircase in the rear lobby. On this floor there are five bedrooms (three double, two twin), three bathrooms (one with an enormous Jacuzzi bath, the other two with
showers) plus a dressing room. 

On the second floor there are five bedrooms (two double, two twin, one very large quadruple for kids), plus two bathrooms (one with shower, one with bath with shower over) and a separate toilet. Both the first and second floor rooms have wonderful views of the surrounding countryside and from the second floor there is access to a small roof terrace with particularly stunning views over the village, its church and the beautiful countryside beyond.  Wonderful for kir royales in the evening.

There is satellite television, cd and dvd player (plus a collection of dvds), playstation room (with games) and bar billiards. In the cellars there is an indoor table tennis table and table football. The large south facing walled garden has mature trees and shrubs, a heated swimming pool (10m x 5m), alarmed and separated from the house by a fence, a Jacuzzi hot tub, a barbecue, patio furniture and sun loungers, table tennis, boules pitch, sand pit plus plenty of space for children to play. There is a park with two hard tennis courts and a football pitch within 2 minutes walk.

About the location

This part of France benefits from a wonderful warm climate extending from March right through to October due to the effect of the Gulf Stream – in fact it is the second sunniest area in France after the Riviera.

The beautiful blue flag sandy beaches and coves of Meschers, Saint-Georges-de-Didonne and Royan are 25 - 30 minutes drive away. The historic towns of Saintes or Pons are under 30 minutes away. Within an hour you can be in the beautiful ancient port of La Rochelle, cross over to the Ile de Re, or in the vineyards of Bordeaux or the lovely mediaeval town of Saint Emilion.

There are fifteen Michelin recommended restaurants within a fifteen mile drive with seafood, salt-marsh lamb, foie gras and duck the specialities of the area. And, if you want to eat in, there are also many local markets, including those at Cozes, Mirambeau and Gemozac, where you will find fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses, meat and plenty of the local seafood.

St Fort is a delightful village 3km inland from the tiny estuary fishing village of Port Maubert. Saint Fort has all the local amenities you need – including bakers, bank, post office, chemist, tourist office and bar - plus a famous 12^th century church. It is surrounded by vineyards that produce the local Pineau des Charentes as well as Cognac.

This is great countryside for walking, cycling and birdwatching. Tennis, fishing, horseriding and canoeing are also available locally. There are fifteen Michelin featured restaurants within a fifteen mile drive with seafood, salt-marsh lamb, foie gras and duck the specialities of the area. And, if you want to eat in, there are also many local markets, including those at Cozes, Mirambeau and Gemozac (not to mention the twice weekly one outside the front door), where you will find fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses, meat and plenty of the local seafood.

Sandy Beaches

Within 25 minutes drive of St Fort you will find some of the best sandy beaches in Europe including the 3 star Michelin rated 2km long fine sandy beach at Royan, Saint-Georges-de-Didonne, Meschers and La Plage des Vergnes where you will also find caves and rock pools. The beaches of the Cote Sauvage (north of Royan) have the best waves for water sports and fabulous sand dunes. Similarly the islands of Ile de Re and Ile d’Oleron have some wonderful stretches of sand.

How to get here

We can supply tried and tested routes down from various ports, if required.

• The Brittany Ferry trip to St Malo is the longest but it has the shortest car journey with autoroute most of the way (4-5 hours).
• The shortest and quickest sea route is Dover to Calais with the car journey taking around 7 hours.
• The journey from Le Havre also takes around 6 to 7 hours.

All routes, including those that cross from Dover or by Tunnel, use the A10 autoroute in the later stages.
