Home description

Our holiday home in Languedoc Roussillon is situated in a region of outstanding natural beauty. There are many attractions locally including nearby lakes which are great for picnics, some of which offer windsurfing such as the Basin Du Lampy near Saissac. For the historically minded, the area is abundant with ancient Cathar villages and forts.

Located between the Mediterranean and the Pyrénées, the property is an ideal base for walking, trout fishing and sightseeing. It is available all year round.

This holiday home in the heart of the Aude department is a self contained part-barn conversion. It is attached to an ancient moulin (once a water mill) but secluded by having its own driveway and entrance. The moulin itself is set in eight acres of private woodland and gardens that stretch down to the river.

Guests are welcome to use the two woodland trails that lead through the owner's forest and one that joins a rambler's trail on a high ridge adjacent to vineyards and giving views of the Pyrénées.

The apartment can accommodate up to four, and the layout consists of:

• Patio area leads through double doors to:
• Ground floor open plan area approx 50m2 – terracotta floor with fitted kitchen, breakfast bar and sitting room area. French windows look out across the garden and river. The new kitchen is equipped with gas cooker, hob, fridge, microwave and most mod cons (toaster, cafetiere etc.). There are two outdoor terraces one of which overlooks the river with an outdoor table and parasole for al fresco dining. There is a sofa bed under the mezzanine floor and a relaxation area with TV/DVD player.

Central staircase leads to:

• Mezzanine floor with double glazed landing window and a double bed to the left of the stairway and the bathroom to the right including shower unit.

Additional Information

Hot water for kitchen and bathroom with electric heater. Apartment is heated with an authentic wood burning stove in addition to out of season electric heating.
A BBQ is also available for outdoor use.

Fishing for river trout (in season) is also available, as is use of mountain bikes, which are available on site. There is even the option for an excursion to paint or sketch with a local artist.  If horse-riding is your thing, then a hack or 'promenade' can be arranged at a local stables.  The owners are on site to give you whatever local information you may need to make your stay a pleasant and relaxing experience.

About the location

The nearest small town is Bram, which has banks, pharmacies and supermarkets. It is also possible to hire a boat to sail along the Canal Du Midi or to book an excursion for the day.

Situated in front of the woodland of Le Petit Grange are vineyards – the produce of which is available direct from the local cave (a complementary chilled bottle of the Chardonnay awaits in the fridge for guests).

Beyond Le Petit Grange, there are many fascinating local villages and one of the most charming is Montolieu – known as the village of books. There is also an outdoor swimming pool situated in Montolieu as well as restaurants, galleries and an enchanting brocante. The drive alone is worth the visit just to experience the wonderful views of the Montagne Noir and to stop en-route to look around the ancient abbey of Villelongue.

A twenty minute drive away from our holiday home is Carcassonne, where the medieval castle La Cite is really worth a visit. There are lots of tourist shops and restaurants but also museums, galleries and events each week in the summer including concerts for all tastes and splendid horse displays.

Castelnaudary, famous for its Cassoulet dish is also just a 20 minute drive and is also historically interesting again with river excursions. In just an hour you can drive to the nearest beach, Narbonne Plage and to the west, the foothills of the Pyrenees.

Getting There

Carcassonne airport is just 20 minutes away, with cheap flights available from Stansted to Carcassonne via Ryanair and a new route from Manchester. Car hire is available from Carcassonne airport.
