Home description

Le Mas des Gardiols is an authentic Provencal stone village home over three hundred years old with beamed ceilings, exposed stone walls, plus a traditional bread oven, original tile floors, and spiral staircase to the second level. It is located in a quiet hamlet outside a small, perched village (dating back to Charlemagne) and rests beside a cherry orchard near the home's garden where the swimming pool is nestled among lavender, roses and oleander.  The original owners likely worked harvesting wine, olives, and the abundant fruit.

The house is lovingly restored with modern baths, extra hot water heaters, brand new comfortable beds, a gourmet kitchen; and is decorated with authentic provencal antique furnishings and interior appointments. A lovely garden containing regional spices and flowers decorates the private courtyard where a stone table serves as the gathering place for meals, or an aperitif.

About the location

Les Gardiols is located on a plateau in the heart of the Luberon Valley. Dozens of medieval villages, each with its own particular charm, pepper the Luberon area. In the peaceful mornings, you can take a 7 minute scenic walk up the hill to the perched medieval village of Joucas for fresh bread and croissants, or drive no more than 10 minutes to Gordes, Roussillon, Goult, or Murs all picturesque villages and each with a different allure. Les Gardiols is also conveniently located near the equally charming villages of Saignon and St Saturnin les Apt, with Orange and Vaison la Romaine and their Roman ruins an easy drive away. Clean Mediterranean beaches are 80 minutes away and make an easy day trip.

A variety of traditional, palate pleasing options are at hand. If you love to market and enjoy dinner at home, a different outdoor market, each with its own specialty, can be found in one of the local villages every day. You can cook with fresh local ingredients or have a cook do it for you.

Delicious local Cote de Luberon and Ventoux wiines, other delicious reasonably priced wines can be found at local co-ops and nearby domaines with world famous Chateauneuf du Pape less than 1 hour away. Besides wine, a route des oliviers runs from the Luberon to St Remy. Here one can discover fine tasty olive oil, olives and tapanades. Alternately, you may also eat at one of the many near-by world-class and Michelin star rated restaurants in the vicinity.

The Luberon region abounds with history. Remnants of the roman presence are found mixed with treasures from the early christain inhabitants.  Avignon, home of the French popes during the Roman Catholic's church's France exile in the 14th century is just a short trip, and Petrarch, one literary symbol of the renaissance lived much of his adult life in nearby Fountaine de Vaucluse where he met his legendary love Laura. Marquis de Sade's (supposedly a relative of Petrarch's Laura) castle is located in nearby Lacoste and Madame de Sevigne's --literary figure from Louis XIV's time -- daughter lived in nearby Grignan where her chateau remains open to visitors and her mother's room is in tact. This is the short list. A more complete list of local sites and options is provided upon arrival. Plus the owner is happy to supply any maps or suggestions to tailor your visit to your interests.
