Home description

Le Castel is a classic Napoleon III chateau with twin turrets. It is small, intimate chateau in Normandy's Manche region. We offer high quality and versatile accommodation for one to 21 people.

Le Castel features just six luxurious bedrooms, which are all ensuite.  You can rent anything from one room on a bed and breakfast basis to the whole house for a party, family holiday or wedding. If you book the whole house you have the option of being fully catered, part catered or self catering.

There is also a self catering gite in a beautiful 18th century stone Longere. It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms (one ensuite).

The chateau guest house sleeps up to 13 adults in four double rooms, a twin and a triple room. There are also two fold up beds for children and three cribs for babies.

The two bed cottage sleeps four people . Child beds and cots are also available.

The house and gite are set in four acres of secluded parkland in countryside just outside the cathedral city of Coutances. Le Castel is ideally located for visiting Mont St Michel, the D Day Beaches and Bayeux. 

Wide, sandy beaches are 20 minutes away.

Le Castel is ideal for exclusive hire - groups of family and/or friends can take over the whole chateau at reduced rates. You can hire it on a self catering basis, with bed and breakfast or as a fully catered house party. At Christmas and New Year the chateau is only available on an exclusive hire basis. The chateau is elaborately decorated for the festive season with a 9 foot high Christmas tree, dress fire places and staircase. The chateau is perfect for old Victorian party games like Murder in the Dark and Sardines. The chateau is warm and cosy in winter, with central heating a roaring log fires.

Le Castel is also perfect for small weddings. The back drop of the house makes spectacular photographs.

Le Castel has two friendly and curious llamas that can be taken for walks by guests. It is a unique experience!

Le Castel is furnished in period style throughout and offers an elegant yet relaxing atmosphere for an enjoyable chateau break.

The six guest rooms (Napoleon, Josephine, Marie-Antoinette, Louis plus Joan of Arc and The Dauphin) are all individually furnished with antique bedroom suites. The four rooms on the first floor have tall French windows with working shutters, and three of the rooms have open fireplaces.

All rooms have ensuite bathrooms or shower rooms with natural light. The two largest bathrooms enjoy fantastic views over the gardens, perfect for a long relaxing soak.

Two rooms on the top floor, called Joan of Arc and The Dauphin, can be used seperately or they can be linked together as a suite. Joan of Arc includes a double bed and a single bed and has a large shower room. The Dauphin is a double room with a claw foot bath in the window overlooking stunning countryside.  Together they offer great flexibility for families or friends.

The focus of the ground floor of Le Castel is the white baby grand piano, which is complemented by imposing stone fireplaces and crystal chandeliers. Double French doors lead out onto a sunny terrace overlooking the large lawn and rolling farmland.

Guests are able to treat Le Castel as their own house during their stay. The salon is a great place to relax in at any time of the day, with large comfortable sofas and tall windows. However it is particularly inviting at night with the candles lit and fire blazing.

The cosy study is just off of the salon and offers and quiet place to sit and read one of the large selection of books available, or perhaps watch a DVD, listen to a CD, or chose a board game. There is also phone and internet access available for guests to use, free of charge.  There is Wi Fi access.

Breakfast is taken around the old farmhouse table in the large and bright kitchen, which features an open fire as well as a wood-burning stove.

Le Castel is set amongst four acres of gardens. The rear of the house looks out on to a well tended lawn and several copses of tall trees – the lawn is south facing so receives the sun throughout the day.

To the front of the house the gardens have a parkland design including a small orchard and some old specimen trees, planted when the house was first built, which provide lots of secluded areas to discover. There is an old stable block where a couple of bikes are kept for guests' usage.

Accommodation is on a B&B basis, but evening 'table d'hote' (host's table) meals are also available - served by candlelight in the dining room around the large walnut table, or in summer perhaps out on the terrace or amongst the trees in the garden. The food served focuses as much as possible on local Normandy specialities and produce.

At Le Castel you can take one room or all six rooms for a family party, small conference or a wedding blessing.

About the location

Le Castel is close to the pretty hill-top cathedral town of Coutances. All of the main tourist sights of Normandy are also easily reached including Mont St Michel, Bayeaux, and the D-Day beaches. The old Norman cities of Caen and Rouen can both be visited easily in a day and provide some great shopping as well as fascinating history to discover. Rennes is also an hour away. We are 20 minutes from beautiful, deserted beaches. Golf courses are also 20 minutes away.

How to get here

How to get there:

Le Castel is around an hour from the channel ports of Cherbourg and Caen. Or you can fly to Dinard airport (with Ryanair flights from London Stansted, Bristol or East Midlands), which is around 90 minutes away.  The Eurotunnel is an easy 4 hour drive away.

The local towns of Coutances and Saint Lo also have SNCF stations offering easy rail transfers from Cherbourg, Caen and Paris. Paris is 2.5 hours away by train.
