Home description

Where is it

Haute-Vienne

Amid forty acres sprawling over a hilltop above the Gartempe valley in the Limousin region of France, Le Repaire is a classic Limousin farm with four luxury holiday cottages ('gites') in a courtyard setting, with a large sparkling pool, in one of the greenest, least populated and most unspoiled areas of France.

The 19th Century stone and tiled roof barn has recently been sympathetically converted to provide three large gites, 'Hirondelle', 'Martinet' and 'Gartempe' and a smaller one 'La Petite'. Each offers luxurious accommodation, with attractive original stonework and exposed beams, tiled and wooden floors, and private gardens with patios and furniture. The gites are beautifully decorated and furnished, with each also featuring gas central heating and double-glazed windows and doors, for out of season comfort.

For those who like nothing better than lazing by a pool and gazing over the countryside, Le Repaire features a large 12m x 6m floodlit pool with semi-circular roman steps. Surrounding the pool is a tiled terrace with views over the valley and a full range of sunbathing and garden furniture along with sun-shades and parasols.

About the location

Le Repaire is some five kilometers northeast of Bellac, an historic market town with a fine twelfth century church, a sixteenth century town hall, a museum and a viaduct over the river that winds through the town. Today the town is charming mix of shops, bars and restaurants. The regular market is a great place to buy vegetables, meats and wines direct from local farmers. Bellac is ringed by a number of picturesque medieval towns and villages including Le Dorat, Rocheouart, Rochefoucold and Confolens. Each offers interesting historical sites, monuments, museums, etc. as well as a variety of shops and eateries. Those interested in the history of the area may also want to follow the 'Richard the Lionheart' trail which winds it's way through the surrounding Haute Vienne. To the south lies the thriving market town of St Junien which is one of the centres of the French leather industry. Between Bellac and St Junien lies the museum village of Oradour-sur-Glanne - perfectly preserved as a national monument since the day its inhabitants were murdered in the second world war.

Some 40km to the east of Le Repaire lies the capital of the Limousin region, Limoges. An energetic and charming city, Limoges provides all of the shopping, restaurants, and historical & cultural attractions that you would expect of an historic regional capital. Of particular interest are the numerous shops, workshops, factories and museums specializing in fine Limoges pottery and enamel work. No trip to Limoges and environs would be complete without picking up some pottery or enamel treasure - ranging from specialist collectors pieces to perfect looking 'seconds' direct from Limoges potteries.

Any worthwhile trip to the Limousin has to include sampling the region's food and wine. The restaurants, bistros and cafes in the area run from the simple cheap and cheerful (but still with great food and ambiance) 'Chez-Sylvie' cafe-bar in Peyrat-de-Bellac to the pretty and delicious 'Auberge de Quartre Saisons'  in Berneuil and the elegant 'Le Relais' hotel restaurant in nearby Mortemart. Regional specialties include Bellac lamb, Limousin beef and local goats cheese. Being situated between the Loire and Bordeaux regions also has its benefits in terms of the wines available. Even simple bars offer some great wine selections - with many especially good Cahors reds from just down the road. For tasting and purchase of a wide variety of different wines, 'Caves de Limousin' a large wine-seller can be found locally.
