Where is it

Aude

Lying just to the south of Fanjeaux, 25 minutes from Carcassonne airport and one hour from Toulouse airport, La Chevaline offers an ideal base from which to explore the stunning surrounding countryside.

The farmhouse was built in 1783 and has been converted to provide comfortable accommodation in four cottages, each with a dedicated garden area equipped with patio furniture and a barbecue.

Each cottage has a well-equipped kitchen area containing a cooker, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge freezer, filter coffee maker and toaster. The living rooms have CD/Radio/Cassette player, sofas or easy chairs.  Rental prices include household linen and all utilities.  Pool towels are available on request.

The pool enclosure houses a main pool (12.5 x 5 metres), a children's pool (3 x 3 metres) and a terrace with loungers and tables. Our boulodrome is covered and also contains a table tennis table, badminton net and games equipment for adults and children. In a clearing in the half-acre woods we have a swing set with swing, trapeze and double rings.

At the end of the main building  we have a small bar for residents use. Le Fig Tree is licensed to sell beer, wine, cider and soft drinks and we also serve freshly made pizzas 'al fresco' in the evening.

We have a small library and a selection of jigsaws and board games which are available for loan.

About the location

Fanjeaux has a restaurant, bar-café-tabac, bakery, butcher, small grocery, post office, hairdresser, teashop, tourist office, pharmacy, a doctor and a petrol station. The nearest supermarket is in Bram, ten minutes away.

Lying between the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenées, close to Carcassonne, the Mediterranean and the vineyards of the Corbières and Minervois, Fanjeaux is the ideal base for enjoying the wealth of activities, areas of interest and historic sites.

The walled city of Carcassonne dates back to the Gauls and was for centuries one of the major fortress cities in the south west of France. Renovated in the 19th century today it is a perfect example of a medieval walled city. Within its walls are narrow streets with shops and restaurants and the ramparts provide a breath-taking view of the city and plains below. Summer visitors will find a medieval 'Son-et-Lumière' show as well as festivals featuring music, drama and dance. The city is lit up every evening throughout the year and is a stunning sight.

Near to Fanjeaux is the medieval town of Mirepoix with its 13th century covered galleries around the market square and Castelnaudary where you can take a leisurely boat trip along the Canal du Midi. Walking and driving tours, exploring the many Cathar castles in the area.

The quality of the light in southern France has long attracted painters and photographers. In this very agricultural area the landscape is coloured with the changing seasons and everywhere there are awe-inspiring views across the plains to the mountains.
