Beaumont, as its name suggests, is situated on a rise in the land which overlooks the coastal plane of the Atlantic seaboard with its landscape of winding rivers, sunflower fields and oyster beds.
The climate of the Charente Maritime ensures that the region is in the top league for hours of sunshine while not suffering from the extremes of temperature found in inland areas.
There is plenty to see and do, with historic towns, like La Rochelle and Saintes, or lively seaside resorts such as Royan all within about half an hour's drive. Rochefort (15 mins.) is the nearest large town with a superb morning market, good shops, museums and historic buildings. Smaller towns, for example the citadel of Brouage, as well as fascinating chateaux and the glorious beaches of the Côte Sauvage and the I'le d'Oléron are just as near. In fact, our nearest beach is under 5 miles away. The area is a centre for bird watching with several reserves within easy reach (for further details, see below)
Restaurants mainly specialise in seafood (the area provides much of France with mussels and oysters) but there is always a choice, even on modest fixed-price menus which offer amazing value in the restaurants in the surrounding villages. Our nearest village, St. Agnant, is about 5 mins. away and has a couple of pleasant bar/restaurants and a good supermarket (who also produce excellent take-away meals)
The Charente-Maritime is a popular area to retire to and we have helped many of our clients relocate to this part of the world. We have an increasing number of people staying with us out of the normal holiday season searching for their ideal retirement or second home and we frequently act as their interpreters with local estate agents and notaires.
We have had a wonderful week - our first ever trip abroad with our children - and we have all enjoyed it so much. The weather has been fabulous and we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay - it has everything we needed and much more besides.
Great week, what a beautiful house in a perfect setting. There is everything here for the children and if they are happy then we can unwind that much quicker. Alan and Caroline couldn't have been more friendly. Thank you - especially for Ben's fishing trips around the pond. The catch included frogs, fish, tadpoles and even a snake! What more can a lad wish for?
Thank you for helping to make our staying an enjoyable one. We all had a fantastic holiday despite the weather. Your house was one of the best properties we have stayed in and the service you provided was first class.
We would love to holiday at Beaumont again in the future and have told everybody what a great place Beaumont is to stay. The kids had a great holiday and have already asked when they can go back.
The five holiday cottages have been created from the barns and stables attached to the farmhouse. The ten acre site includes a large L-shaped heated swimming pool (open April-Oct) set among picturesque ruins, a sandpit, swings and climbing frame, a Wendy house, badminton, petanque etc. There is a large natural pond teeming with wildlife and a number of fruit trees, the produce of which guests are welcome to enjoy. The games barn has table tennis, billiards, table football etc. and houses the video library of around 600 titles (the book library, about 1500 titles, is spread among the cottages). During high season, bed linen, towels and tea towels are provided. There is no extra charge for the number of guests in each cottage but there is a charge for the hire of a folding bed - see booking form. Prices include electricity (except in low season) water and the use of all facilities.
All cottages include: Washing machine, electric cooker, refrigerator, television, video player, electric heater, paved terrace with garden furniture and barbecue. There is a double sofa bed in each living room.
Each has 2 bedrooms & sleeps 4 + sofa bed. (max 6)
Le Macareux and La Chouette are adjoining single storey cottages which have been formed from ancient stone stables, retaining exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings and tiled floors. Each has living room with kitchen area, a double bedroom, a twin bedroom and a shower/WC. The stable cottages obliquely overlook the swimming pool.
The Charente-Maritime has around 2300 sunshine hours a year - comparable to the Mediterranean in the micro-climate in our part of the region, thanks to the off-shore islands and the Gulf Stream. Most beaches are safe for small children but some are excellent for wind-surfing and body-board surfing. Areas for jet-ski and wind-surfing are usually clearly defined so that these activities do not impinge on the shore bathing.

We usually take Brittany Ferries to St. Malo (about 235 miles). Cherbourg, Le Havre or Caen provide shorter crossings but longer drives, although now that the new motorway is almost complete the journey times are much quicker than before. Some of our visitors prefer to take the short crossing to Calais and stay overnight, particularly as it then becomes easy to fit in a day at Futuroscope, just outside Poitiers, en route. Detailed directions showing our exact location will be provided with confirmation of your final payment.
