Home description

Where is it

Hérault

Le Pressoir is an old wine press building in a quiet setting amongst the Languedoc vineyards, which has been tastefully converted to provide comfortable accommodation for up to 4 people (plus a baby).  It is situated approximately 30 metres from the owners own house within 2 acres of well-maintained and fully enclosed gardens. Le Pressoir is the owners only gîte so you share the swimming pool and gardens with no other guests, the owners use the pool occasionally.

Within the gardens is a fenced swimming pool (7 metres by 3.5 metres), and a children's play area with swings, slide and climbing frame. As well as the gardens, Le Pressoir also has its own roof terrace from which you have stunning views of the surrounding countryside and nearby medieval village of St Pons de Mauchiens. In gardens there are trees providing shade, sun loungers, table and chairs and a large barbecue, the owners  even provide old vines to burn on the barbeque, much better than charcoal! The owners can also provide baby equipment such as pushchairs, cots, highchairs etc. at no charge.

The local village, which is a short walk through the vineyards, has a delightful bar/bistro where Stephan and Sylvie, the owners, will make you very welcome as will all the locals. There are more shops, bars and restaurants two minutes drive away in St Pargoire and supermarkets in nearby Pezenas (10 minutes) and Beziers (25 minutes). The local village is 20 minutes walk through the vineyards and has a general provisions shop which sells delicious fresh bread,  croissants and local wine. At Le Pressoir the owners are normally on hand to answer any questions and generally to make you welcome. Le Pressoir has maps, guidebooks and leaflets to guide you around the area.

Le Pressoir is situated just outside the beautiful medieval village of St Pons de Mauchiens.  The property is between Montpellier and Beziers about 16 kilometres (10 miles) from the Mediterranean.

Le Pressoir is perfectly placed for the Mediterranean; the nearest beaches can be reached in just 20 minutes. As well as beaches, there are beautiful lakes, mountains and gorges within one hours drive.  The area has large numbers of medieval towns and villages to visit including Pezenas, St Guilhem-le-Desert and the Cite of Carcassonne.  Just over hours drive will take you to the heart of 'Cathar' country with its imposing castles and monasteries such as Montsegur and Queribus. Plenty of activities are to be found near to Le Pressoir including golf, horse riding, sailing, fishing and tennis. For the more adventurous the Spanish border can be reached in about 90 minutes and a further hour takes you to Barcelona.

About the location

Cap d'Agde: 30 minutes drive from Pezenas is the holiday resort of Cap d'Agde.  It has some 14 kilometres of fine beaches and many attractions for the children like 'Toonland' and the famous 'Aqua Park' with its giant flumes, water slides and wave machine as well as a super 'tots area' for the very young.  There is also much to explore nearby.  To the west, follow the Canal du Midi, which is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and visit the cities of Beziers and Narbonne

Meze: The gateway to the Mediterranean and only 20 minutes drive from Le Pressoir, Meze is a delightful little town with a wonderful harbour and lots of narrow winding streets.  It is situated on the 'Bassin de Thau.  There are small beaches to both sides of the harbour, which are clean, and the water is shallow, ideal for children.  Take lunch at one of the many restaurants surrounding the harbour, where you will find some of the most wonderful seafood dishes.  If you need to walk off your lunch then stroll up to the 15th Century church or visit one of the many shops and stalls selling coquillage (shellfish), wine or clothes.

Gorge d'Heric: Just one hour away, the Heric gorge is one of the most outstanding beauty spots in the Espinouse mountain range.  The walls of the gorge are the finest rockfaces in the region and the area is popular with walkers and climbers.  The paths and rockpools provide a wonderful venue for a days exploring and picnicking.  There is a super little scenic road train that takes visitors on a picturesque route as far as the Gouffre du Cerisier when you can chose either the train to return or take a splendid walk back down past the rock pools and foaming waters of the Heric.

Montpellier: Capital of Languedoc-Roussillon, owes much of its charm to its beautiful historic buildings and districts and superb gardens and open spaces.  Good places to sample the unique atmosphere of this wonderful city are the Place de la Comedie with its brasseries, theatres and large nearby shopping malls, the Place Jean-Jaures and surrounding streets and Esplanade de l'Europe.
