So, would you like it here?
First of all there's us, the proprietors: Phil, (professional photographer), Julie (an ergothérapeute) & Lipton, (French, friendly, and four-pawed) easily confused with both the reception committee and staff (these being Phil, Julie & Lipton!) -So - What are we like? ....
Relaxed, laid back, down to earth, free & easy going, into having a good time and firmly believing that life should not be taken too seriously!
La Guinguette means very different things to many people and she changes with the seasons:
From low season, when the only distractions may be the sound of someone turning the page of a book, the water tumbling into the pool or the sounds of the countryside;
To high season when she takes on her own lively atmosphere, people frequently get together, with a communal barbecue, often leading to an impromptu party, sometimes with outside music of your own choice by request and popular consent(Ipod/CD's provided by any and everyone), or everyone just chatting and exchanging experiences. Nothing here is usually planned or organized, it just happens!
Another time, people may choose to challenge their neighbours to a game of boules or simply make the most of their own company.
Why not book neighbouring gîtes with your friends, so that you are free to enjoy their company, have your own space and not have to share their habits and hours!
Whatever the mood of the moment, it is created by everyone staying here at that time and although one week may be very different from the next, a high proportion leave, having made new friends or renewed "old" friendships from a previous holiday and promising to return, maintaining our confidence that we can please most of the people, most of the time! So, if you like the sound of La Guinguette's friendly, totally relaxed, liberal and laid-back atmosphere, (after all who needs rules to holiday by?) why not book with us and see for yourselves?
La Guinguette is a beautiful old farmstead, with mellow, weathered stone walls, clad in wisteria and geraniums; brick quoined doors and windows; under a traditional Roman tiled roof.
She faces the Pyrénées, which dominate the Southern horizon, (it's foothills are 30 minutes drive away while you can be on the ski slopes in an hour) on the very border of the Midi Pyrénées and Languedoc regions; set in 6 acres surrounded by fields and an abundant bird and wildlife population.
Purchased in July 1995, as a dilapidated farmstead, with a collapsing roof sat in overgrown fields, the owners have spent the time since, completing the "considerable" renovation and conversion works necessary to combine the comfort of modern plumbing, electrics and where possible double glazing; sympathetically with the charm of the original property and it's huge old timbers; to provide comfortable holiday accommodation with rustic charm.
Out of season, there are frequently days when the warm sun tempts the lizards out to sunbathe and grab a passing snack! the evening temperatures can however drop dramatically and so there is central heating in all the gîtes, for your extra comfort on such occasions.
The level grounds are mainly set to lawns, with raised rockeries, mature trees and a small shady garden bounded by shrubs.
The inground pool, 9 x 4 metres, is 1 metre deep, dished down to 1.8 at the deep end, bordered by a laurel hedge, shrub covered wall, trellis, and pool house, making it a secluded and sheltered area to relax in.
There are sunloungers (enough for everyone), parasols, picnic tables, benches & barbecue facilities, which can be moved to sun or shade as you wish.
Dogs with well behaved owners are welcome, there is a seperate field for them to exercise in.

About Mazeres in Ariège, Midi Pyrenees
The farmstead is situated in the open countryside, three miles from Mazères; a 13th Century Bastide town, which has a full range of shops (including a new supermarket), amenities and a weekly market abounding with excellent local produce to tempt you.
There is a thriving French local community, with innumerable Fêtes and festivities being put on throughout the year (over 250 in Ariège alone, you can discover everything from concerts to caves, fireworks to fetes!!)
The property is within easy reach of historic towns such as Foix, Carcassonne and Mirepoix (with its 13th century timbered arcades in the main square); Castelnaudary; on the Canal du Midi, renowned for its Cassoulet and the Foreign Legion; or the Cosmopolitan city of Toulouse; only 45 minutes away.
If you prefer the countryside, there is an amazingly diverse landscape close by: of mountains, with their remote Bastide villages perched high in their midst, lakes and rivers just waiting to be explored, perfect for walkers and photographers alike. Superb countryside for bikers & cyclists, whether you enjoy leisurely local rides or the challenge of the steep mountain passes of the Pyrénées. Alternatively you could of course, just relax by the pool or under the trees, with a glass of local wine, contemplating what to have for lunch.

How To Get To Mazeres in Ariège, South West France
There are numerous ways to get to La Guinguette. Whilst many people drive down from one of the Northern Channel ports, most now seem to fly-drive into Blagnac Airport in Toulouse, Carcassonne, Perpignan or Montpellier (look out for good deals on Flybe, Easy Jet, Ryanair and other low cost airlines!). After all both Toulouse and Carcassonne are only 45 minutes away! It is also worth exploring the comparative costs of flying to either Gerona or Barcelona (car hire is generally much cheaper in Spain!), these airports being within 2.5 to 3.5 hours respectively via the autoroutes, just check you are free to travel into France with the car hire people.
With the A66 peage only 10 kms away (close enough for convenience without any disturbance) La Guinguette itself is easy to find once you are in Mazères, situated off (but in sight of) a D road between Mazères and Belpech, but we have detailed travel instructions available to help you from further afield e.g. Toulouse, Carcassonne, Gerona and Barcelona Airports; or the routes between local autoroutes or Route Nationale roads.
