About the location

Sarlat known for several centuries as the Périgord Noir dates back to the 9th century. With its maze of alleys and squares and its cathedral it is by far the most important tourist site in the region. The city is very much alive particularly at night during the summer months. There is a picturesque market on Wednesdays in the centre of the old part of the town Place de la Liberté.

Beynac and its castle are undoubtedly one of the finest sites in France. The village is built in stages above the water's edge at the bottom of a 150-metre cliff topped by an impressive fort. Dordogne Valley [10kms] the gabarrier boatman has been replaced on the river by the holidaymaker. A canoe or kayak trip can last as long as you wish and you can travel as far as you feel able and a when it is over you will be driven back to where you started. The river with its magnificent loops has produced the superb limestone cliffs for which the Dordogne is famous. With its innumerable chateau towering over the water and the picturesque riverside villages including Montford, Castelnaud, Vitrac, Domme, and La Roque Gageac it is the most splendid stretch of France's most beautiful river. It is shallow and completely safe for young children and beginners.

Les Eyzies is considered the world capital of prehistory. The concentration and variety of prehistoric sites makes this area unquestionably the richest in Europe.

Montignac on the banks of the Vezére owes its fame to the discovery of the "eighth wonder of the world", the Lascaux cave. Thought to date as far back as 15000 BC the Lascaux cave discovered by four small boys in 1940 is the finest of all prehistoric painted caves.

Eyrignac Manor and its remarkable gardens created in the 18th century have been restored to their original level of ornamental perfection and well worth a visit.

Domme overlooking the Dordogne valley is an architectural masterpiece and described as the finest French bastide in the Périgord.

La Roque Gageac recently awarded the enviable title of the most beautiful village in France. It is the third site in France after Mont-Saint-Michel and Rocamadour, which incidentally is not far from Sarlat.
