Property description

The house is situated close to the central square of Monpazier. A Bastide famous for it’s classic grid system of streets created in 1284 by King Edward 1 on 53 hectares of land granted by the Compte de Biron. Monpazier today stands within the same 53 hectares and is the smallest commune in France. Entering the town through one of the three remaining gateways of four in the stone walls, all roads lead to the magnificent market square. The Halle & the arcades around the square are a highlight. Its medieval buildings seem almost unchanged since the town was built.

Monpazier sits on a rise southeast of Bergerac airport, (40 mins drive). The town in an area of rolling wooded countryside, with many fine walks, popular with locals and visiters alike.

North east is the beautiful Dordogne valley dotted with attractive médiéval villages, towns, gardens and chateaux.

The région in which Monpazier rests is known as ‘Perigord Paurple’, where history and wineyards create a wonderful ambiance, both historically and socially.

Today, in Monpazier, you will find lots of very good restaurants of different prices, and interesting shops selling local produce, wines, pottery, jewellery, antiques, linen & clothes.

Day to day requirements are served by three bakers, two butchers, two small supermarkets, a bank, a pharmacy, a medical centre & a post office, amongst other shops. Market day is Thursday morning.

From May to September there is a great number of organised events, including a Flower Fete, antique fairs, a médiéval fete, (2 days in mid July) etc. There is an Art festival in July & August, and the hosting of concerts as part of the Bergerac Music Festival.
