Property description

The house is in the much sought after village of Caunes-Minervois. Caunes is one of the oldest villages in the Minervois. There was a Roman villa nearby around 400 A.D. and Charlemagne granted a band of monks title to the land where they began to construct a monastery in 791 A.D. The abbey and the village within its walls underwent centuries of construction and reconstruction, religious turmoil and warfare passing through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Revolution into modern times.

The village population of 1500 includes several dozen permanent anglophone residents and swells to 2500 in the summer when the gites and B&Bs fill. The town nestles against the slopes of the Montagne Noire, surrrounded by vineyards and communal forests. The church, refurbished in the pink and red-veined marble quarried nearby, continues in use. The rest of the abbey is the major historical site in the Haut-Minervois. Besides displays relating to the history of the village, it serves as center for art and music in the region. Concerts - both jazz and classical - are held there throughout the year.

The marble quarries continue to furnish stone for building and sculpture just as they did for Louis XIV. Commerce includes several restaurants and a hotel, groceries, bakery, hair salon, bank, butcher, three doctors, a pharmacy, post office and physical therapist. There are tennis courts and petanque courts available free of charge. Hiking trails are numerous in the regional forests that begin at the village limits.

Wine is the major product of the area and Caunes now has half a dozen private producers in addition to the cave cooperative. Other crops like olives and truffles, cherries, apricots and plums serve to emphasize the rural qualities of life enjoyed here. For many years, this region of France was known only for producing inexpensive table wines. However, in recent years the Minervois has developed a well-earned reputation for quality, with prices still very attractive.

The Mediterranean beaches are an hour away and ski resorts in the Pyrenees less than two hours. Barcelona, Spain is 2 1/2  hours.
