Property description

Delightful old stone barn 170 m2, with adjoining pigeonier and separate garage, situated in tranquil countryside in Lot et Garonne, SW France, available for Renovation.

Location

The bam is situated in the small hamlet of Fontvemié which is part of the larger commune of Frespech. There is only a handful of houses in the hamlet which is at the end of a no through road. The ambiance is therefore one of peace and tranquility broken only occasionally by a farm tractor or hens clucking. The mayor of Frespech and several of his family live here, which gives some idea of its desirability.

Agen (the capital of Lot et Garonne) is 28 km to the South West and other smaller towns within a 10 km radius include Laroque Timbaut, Beauville and Penne d'Agenais, all of which have shops, restaurants and weekly markets.

The Area

The geographical triangle between the Rivers Lot and Garonne is known as the Pays de Serres meaning 'An eagle's talon' because the local limestone sometimes looks as though it has been clawed by a huge bird. Many of the local villages haven't changed much since the Middie Ages. Laroque-Timbaut has a 12th-century halle and tiny medieval lanes. Frespech is a delightful hilltop village, where old gates and an 11th-century church still stand intact. At Frespech there is also the Museum of Foie Gras and a restaurant specialising in this local product.

Penne d'Agenais is a splendid example of a fortified hill village (bastide). During the Middle Ages it was an English stronghold, said to have been founded by Richard the Lion heart. The village has been extensively restored in recent years; half-timbered houses and steep, winding streets have attracted many artists and crafts people.
