Evreux, capital town of the department of Eure in Normandy, is an important commercial and market center. It is the seat of a bishop, and its cathedral is one of the largest and finest in France.
Evreux is one of the oldest towns in France. On the Iton river just west of the Eure, it is encased in postwar architecture, but has a trio of attractions: an excellent museum with exceptional Gallo-roman finds; a Cathedral of Notre-Dame (11th-18th C.) with splendid Flamboyant Gothic features and stained glass that the war bombs missed; and the Abbey of St Taurin (11th-15th C.) that contains the thirteenth century shrine of Saint Taurin, a masterpiece of French goldsmith's work.
Evreux has had a dramatic history from being flattened by the Vandals in the 5th centuary, Pillaged by Normans 892; taken and burned by Henry I of England 1119; captured by Philip Augustus of France 1194; Evreux alternated between English and French control in 15th centuary.
The city was badly damaged during the air raids of 1940 (when Evreux burned for a week) and 1944.
Interesting fact: Jimi Hendrix kicked off his first tour with the Experience in the town of Evreux, 13 October 1966 - an event commemorated by a plaque in the town!
Évreux is located in the Eure department in Normandy in northwestern France.
Trains: The train station Évreux-Embranchement is on the railway line from Gare Saint-Lazare to Cherbourg, it is served by regular Intercity and regional rail services to both Paris and Basse-Normandie.
Air: The closest international airports are in Paris.
Road: A couple of autoroutes go to the nearby city of Rouen and from there take the N154 to Evreux.
