Chateauroux (Indre, Loire Valley)

The pretty floral town of Chateauroux lies two hours south of Paris and despite its proximity to the capital enjoys a tranquil, laid-back way of life.

The name Chateauroux originates from its founding in 937 by the princes of Deols, when it was named Chateau Raoul.

The visitor is spoiled by a rich cultural heritage evident in the many museums and historic buildings in the town and surrounding area. A visit to La Prairie Saint-Gilda is also a must for the nature lovers among you. Situated on the banks of the river Indre, this superb nature reserve is home to a variety of rich flora and fauna. Guided visits of the nature reserve plus the historic centre are available at the tourist office.

Châteauroux is the home to LB Châteauroux, a French football team playing in Ligue 2, the second highest division of French football.

Food

Local cusine tends to be rustic and solid but not without taste. Sample some of the delicious goat's cheeses including le Valencay, le Pouligny-Saint-Pierre and le Selles-sur-Cher or try the local wine Valencay and Reuilly.
