Vichy is on the banks of the Allier river which originates from the nearby Massif Central Mountain range to the south, near Clermont-Ferrand. Volcanic activity is the direct cause of the many thermal springs in Vichy and why it has a leading reputation as a spa resort.

The town has been known for its thermal cures since Roman times. Its water is famous worldwide (coming from springs, including the Vichy Celestins and Vichy Saint-Yorre) but there are also lozenges made from soda contained in the spring waters.
