Lons is located at the foot of the Jura Mountains on a plateau. There are many interesting sights and places to visit here with outdoor concerts (during the summer) as well as spa baths and treatments.

Lons-le-Saunier was virtually all destroyed by fire in the early 17th century, therefore most of the buildings date from that era.

Places of Interest
- The central place de la Liberté, a ten-minute walk north of the train station.
- The Theatre Clock - situated at the eastern end of the square, the clock chimes a familiar jalf-dozen notes from La Marseillaise to honour Lons' most famous son, Rouget de Lisle, the anthem's composer.
- Rue du Commerce - situated north of the square is this attractive colonnaded thoroughfare. You will find some of Lon's oldest buildings located here, lining the street in which de Lisle was born.
- Le Puits Salé - the ancient salt well.
- Musée Municipal d'Archéologie - located at 25 rue Richebourg. Of interest are some prehistoric displays including a touching Neolithic family scene circa 4000 BC, a dug-out canoe found locally and a life-size replica of a 210-million-year-old plateosaurus, France's oldest-known dinosaur. The museum, which also showcases various temporary exhibitions. The museum is housed in the old Bel cheese factory, which once produced the famous La Vache Qui Rit ("Laughing cow") cheese spread.
- Statue of Rouget de Lisle - this statue can be found along avenue Jean-Moulin. It was designed by the sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi.
- Parc Edouard Guenon - here you will find the salines or mineral baths. The venue has been lavishly equipped with a Turkish bath and jucuzzi and sauna. Well worth a visit if you are feeling tired or stressed.
