Roanne is a town in mid-eastern France in the Loire department of the Rhone Alps. It is situated beside the Loire river, 390km SE of Paris and 87km NW of Lyon.

Roanne, situated in the very north of the Loire department, was already a thriving town at the time Jesus was born and was then called Rodumna. In the 11th Century the local lords built a fortress here the ruins of which can still be seen today. In 1883 the creation of a canal to link it with Digoin ensured that it would become a centre of trade. Today it is one of France's top textile producers.
The Joseph-Dechelette Museum (22 rue Anatole-France), situated in an 18th century neoclassic mansion, is noted for its ancient artefacts and offers an exceptional display of Italian and French earthenware from the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 20th centuries, as well as Roanne earthenware.
Roanne also has several ruins from the Roman period, as well as remnants of a medieval château and several 15th and 16th-century houses.
The gorges of the Loire are 3 km south, and the scenic Monts de la Madeleine are a few miles west.
This town is a popular excursion from Lyon and Vichy because it's home to one of France's greatest three-star restaurants, the Hôtel-Restaurant Troisgros in Place Jean Troigros (+ 33 (0)4 77 71 66 97), so if you want to treat yourself to a gastronomic experience be sure to reserve a table.
