It stands on the banks of the River Allier, a tributary of the Loire.The name of the town is derived from the word bridge as it stands by a crossing of the Alliers river.

Brioude is a gateway to the gorges of the Allier river.  A charming town centered around St Julien's Basilica which is the largest roman church of the Auvergne.

There are many outdoor activities in the surrounding countryside and the area is a protected wildlife habitat.
