Le Puy-en-Velay is the main city of the Haute-Loire. The area has many attractions and is known for its liquer, lentils and lace and crafts as well as the countryside and historical areas.
Things to Do
Time can easily be spent meandering through the older part of the town where old and attractive houses can be appreciated. These are easily seen in the streets of Chamarlenc and Pannessac.
There are many natural beauty spots as well as facilities for watersports, excursions, skiing, golf, tennis, cycling, horse riding, bowling, aerial sports e.t.c.
Places of Interest
- Notre-Dame-de-France Cathedral - built in the XIth century, is a definate must see when visiting the city, along with its convent. The cathedral is of Auvergne Romantic style with oriental and Spanish-Moresque influences. It is classified in the UNESCO Worls Heritage.
- The Crozatier Museum - makes an interesting visit. The museum is dedicated to archaeology, art pieces, techniques, ethnography and natural sciences.
- The Corneille Rock - this giant rock overhangs the City by 130 metres and raises the monumental statue of Notre-Dame de France. Views of the city and surrounding area from this rock are out of this world.
Other places worth visiting include Polignac Castle, St Vidal Castle, Pagès Vervain Distillery and the various squares throughout the town.
