The spectacular medieval town of Rocamadour is built into a vertical limestone cliff face. In the middle ages Pilgrims on their way to Santiago di Compestela in Spain would stop here and ascend the 216 steps on their knees to the shrine of Our Lady at the top of the plateau.
Rocamadour (Lot) mini guide
Rocamadour is situated atop a rocky plateau overlooking the Alzou Valley. It receives 1.5 million visitors per year so it is worth going early or late in July or August to avoid the crowds.
Rocamadour is also famouse for its cheese of the same name. It is a delicious goat's milk cheese that melts in the mouth so be sure to try some whilst you are there. You can also get it in cheese shops throughout the area and in larger supermarkets throughout France but it is not easy to find in the UK.
As well as the town itself there are lots of nearby tourist attractions In the vicinity of Rocamadour such as, Gouffre de Padirac (11 km), Grotte de Pech Merle (32 km), or La Roque Gageac (35 km) to visit. By Train: From Paris Austerlitz station, trains depart regularly in the direction of Toulouse. At Brive-la-Gaillarde, change trains for Rocamadour.
By car: From Cahors take the N20 to Payrac then turn onto the D673 for Rocamadour.
