Chaumont is in the Champagne-Ardenne region and is the capital town of the Haute-Marne department. It is situated in Eastern France south east of Paris. It languishes on the edge of a plateau at the confluence of the Marne and the Suize rivers in the upper Marne valley.

Chaumont was built around a 10th century castle which was rebuilt in the 18th century. Chaumont enjoys its strategic position on the steep spur overlooking the Suize and Marne valley and is surrounded by green woods. It has a unique architecture of its own, with many turrets protruding above the entrance doors to houses.

From its Gothic and Renaissance church, the imposing Basilica Chaumont to the imposing rail viaduct, Chaumont has a richness of architecture and historical heritage.

The 16th century church contains an extraordinary masterpiece, a superb straight Tomb dated 1471 that comprises eleven characters in polychrome stone. The visitor is captivated by the artistic representation of pain.

The iconic viaduct is a veritable emblem of the city with its 50 arches on three levels, the impressive stone monument is 600 meters long. It was designed by the architect Emile Decomble as a rail line connecting the upper part of Chaumont. It was built in a record 15 months, between 1855 and 1857. The first level is for pedestrians, with its fantastic view across the valley of the Suize.
