Josselin is famous for the many towered chateau that stands on the banks of the Nantes Brest canal - although you should be warned that in some places the wall appears very low with rather a long drop on the outside!  Keep hold of your children's hands.  You can get a guided tour of the ground floor of the chateau - given once a day in English during the summer.  The Tourist Information Office is just outside the entrance to the chateau.

Josselin has a lovely church - of Notre Dame de Ronciers, renamed after a statue of Our Lady was found in the brambles.  The translation is Our Lady of the Brambles!  The Pardon of Notre Dame de Ronciers takes place in August, to commemorate this discovery.  A local legend tells that many years ago the town women were drawing water from the well when a poor beggar woman came and asked them for a drink.  They meanly turned her away, setting their dogs on her, which was a big mistake.  She turned out to be the Virgin Mary, who put a curse on them for their mean-ness, and said that their children would bark, like dogs!  Apparently every year at the pardon there are children who bark, hoping to be cured of their affliction!

From Easter onwards you can ask for the key to the church tower in the Mairie (just behind the church in a small square) and climb to the top, where the view is amazing.

There are two good supermarkets just on the edge of the town near the N24 which are open all day long and also sell fuel.  The market is on Saturday, where you can buy everything from clothes to hot filled crèpes and galettes, ready cooked chickens and live ones, fearsome looking knives and a huge selection of olives, or a portion of hot couscous or paella.  There are lots of cafés and restaurants where you can sit and watch the world go by.

The Nantes Brest canal runs along the southern side of the town, flanked by old houses, crèperies and restaurants.  There is boat hire there near the lock gates, and you can either walk or bicycle along the towpath in either direction. Just on the corner where the road curves back up to the town centre, away from the canal, you can see the old wash house - watch out and you might well see someone doing their washing in it, even now
