Lorient is located on the south coast of Brittany on the Atlantic Ocean and it is the fourth largest city.
Lorient (Morbihan) mini guide
Lorient is a mordern town with splendid attractions, including a 2nd world war submarine base and some lovely offshore islands. The town was a former French navy base but despite the disappearance of the base many important naval buildings remain around the quayside. Tourism now plays an important part in the cities' economy and there are several large yachting marinas around the bay.
The fishing port is one of the largest in France, if you visit early in the morning you can watch the auction for the night's catch. The fresh seafood is superlative, and together with the delicious crêpes and cider of the region there is little in France that can compete if you are seeking to enjoy excellent regional food, simply served with pride in one of town's many good restaurants.
The beaches around Lorient are both lovely and sandy making them a a good place for a beach holiday.
The town has good selection of shops with both supermarkets and the practical and smaller shops for charm and local colour.
During the first 2 weeks of August there is the annual Interceltique music festival which has around 5000 artists from the British Isles, Spain and Brittany. During the festival cider, crêpes and cotriade (fish stew) can be bought around the fishing harbour, complete with Asterix-style village.
